If you have a good dentist, it won't hurt to have them removed. You'll only feel pressure on your gums, and it's really quick. Your gums will bleed a lot and be very sore afterward for a few hours, so make sure you take lots of ibuprofen. It's not as bad as it sounds, and it'll be over before you know it!

There is a lot of things that play into this. How good is your dentist? How many are getting plucked? How tolerant are you to pain? How straight are the roots? These will all help to determine how the experience will be for you.
A good dentist might give you something to calm your nerves before your appointment(ex. Valium). Pain will be minimal during the extraction, but you will feel pressure on your gums and jaw. If it is an uncomplicated extraction, it will only take a few minutes. Twisted roots or a tooth that breaks will take a little longer.
After its done, follow directions carefully with regards to smoking, using drinking straws and cleaning. You will probably be prescribed a pain killer to help with post surgical pain. Don't be afraid to use it, the pain shouldn't last more than a day.
I had all four done at the same time, and all the roots were twisted. I had it done on a local, it took about 45 minutes and I only needed to take pain killers for a day. A few years latter, I had to have a molar removed and it took over an hour and I had pain for a week. Sorry to say, results vary.

When I had mine pulled, the only pain i really felt was the numbing needle, but even that was just a few pinches or a slight burning sensation. Just make sure when the dentist does start pulling and you feel any pain whatsoever, let the dentist know. He/she will give you more numbing stuff. I had to let my dentist know twice that i still felt some pain but after that i didnt feel anything but pressure. the scariest thing was one, the huge needle for the numbing stuff and second, when his tools slip off the tooth hes trying to pull out and it bangs into your other teeth. That sound is horrible, but once again, no pain. Just alot of noise in your head. Now afterwards, as long as you take your medicine BEFORE you start feeling pain, you shouldnt really feel any at all. Maybe some dull pain but not too bad. If you wait too long or forget to take your meds, thats when the pain really kicks in. Also, you may have some swelling so youll look like a chipmunk or something. I personally didnt have any noticable swelling but some of my friends really swelled up. Call in sick and just rest. The more rest you get, the faster you heal anyways so "enjoy" it while it lasts. Take the good with the bad. :)

I'm not sure what it's like to get teeth pulled out and I'm thankful for that. I had surgery to remove my two wisdom teeth, which were still under my gums, so I had general anesthesia. And if you're getting your teeth pulled out, I'm sure they will give you some form of anesthesia. Anyway, once that wore off, I was on vicodin, so the pain was bearable and I slept more than usual. The pain seems worse the next day and a little after that, but it will go away. You have to clean out the area with a plastic syringe and it seems like no matter what I did, food got stuck in those holes, which was a little irritating. It really doesn't take so long to heal, but I got sick of the soft food diet.
I found this site, which you may want to look at:

They generally knock you out and it takes a couple of hours for the procedure.
Responses to the procedure and anasthesia is really varies. There is generally a lot of bleeding and keeping gauze in your mouth. You also won't probably eat for a day or so, eat normally for about three days, and they do prescribe painkillers.
Some people I know have been swollen and in pain for up to five days, some just have the area go numb and heals up in only a day or two. One wierd case, the person was almost fully recovered after 36 hours, then she got swollen and it started hurting for 2 more days.
It just depends. It's the biggest surgical procedure that a lot of people have, but it's routine and the pain is never extreme. It's manageable but disruptive.

Ha ha, congratulations, I have the same fear too...
Anyways, my wisdom tooth has been damaged too and I've been procrastinating a long time ago not to see my dentist for fear that it'll kill me instantly.
In fact, I was even braver to decide in undergoing spinal surgery than have a minor tooth surgery. Now I am recuperating with my spinal surgery and my wisdom tooth is well....damaged.
My fear of dentist was caused by a trauma when I was a child. I can only afford to have oral prophylaxis with my dentist and that's about it. Tooth extraction? I don't think so.
But if you have a good dentist, and he/she has light hands, then you'd be confident enough.

Some use a weak general while some get a local, either way you won't feel anything. Op usually lasts a bit under an hour, and will probably be sore for a number of days afterwards. Ice your jaw regularly!

yes, it hurts, but not necessarily as badly as you might think. certainly, some have it harder than others, but, in my, personal, experience (and i, like everyone else, hate and fear the dentist - though she happened to be lovely, when i got my wisdom teeth pulled... and a great many sedatives make one say things one might not otherwise say...), the pain of the procedure was slight, and swiftly done with (though there's a feeling of pressure, at times, and it's not FUN, unless you're into that sort of thing), and the pain of the recovery was nothing advil didn't completely cure (even though i was given prescription pain killers - advil worked better - YMMV). good luck!
