Your parents loved the full name. However, they usually subconsciously or maybe consciously pick the nick name in conversation becuase it's easier. Think like this: Angela may have a common nickname of Angie, but I had a friend who went by Angela. Before I knew it I always called her Ang...it wasn't a conscious decision. Her parents no doubt chose Angela because that's the name that they thought was pretty, but I called her Ang out of convenience.
Then some parents give both to give the child options throughout life. I use such options in a different way:

My name is Deborah H. XXXX. I am writing a book and I think it looks dignified and plan on using it when I finally get published. It is what I always use when writing anything; checks, assignments, etc.
However, no one seems to know how to say "Deborah" properly (It's not the same as Debra) so I'd almost rather be called Debbie for that reason alone, but Debbie is easier anyway, and is cute in it's own right, so I get to have two arguably nice names.

Name and nickname have their different purposes of their own. A full name indicates how you should be identified with a parent's name along with your family identification. For example, Ratanchand Manikchand Shah is a full name in which I am Ratanchand, my father's name is Manikchand and I belong to 'Shah' family. Your nickname is 'Shah' only for the purpose of calling and greeting. Nickname, though superfluous, its purpose is for common utility. Name is protected by legal and social licences but not nickname.

My name is Stephanie, I don't have a nickname. I'm not called Steffy, Step, Stevie, or anything else. My parents never called me anything else and I never considered changing it.
