Yes for sure, I travel a lot and I will move maybe to Canada and I must speak both English and French, if you don't wanna learn the language of your new country first you won't find a decent job, second you will aways feel separate from your new society and second if you decide to move to an other country for many reasons mostly economics you should change your way of thinking completely and keep yout identity and "culture" in a small box in your mind and start to respect and appreciate your new country learning its language and culture.. if not you will live in a mental ghetto all your life !!

Yes
This is America if someone wants to become an American then they should learn to read, write and speak English. This way you are right nothing worse then telling someone off racist or not and they have know idea of what you have just said to them. It is the least someone can do for all the freedom and resources they get from becoming an American citizen

Besides If you want to become an American you first need to obey the laws. The Law states you must read and write English to get Citizenship in this Country

We need to first think of America First it only helps this Country for it's Citizens to be able to communicate with one another.
After all America is Our Country
Learn or leave

I think they should, if they are going to be residents. If they are going to be seasonal workers, it is less important. However, if someone wants this country to pay for their children's education and family health care, etc, they should at least accomodate the paying country's culture, not try to change that culture to be their own. I don't know if I would pass a law other than making it a requirement for permenant residency, but that is my opinion of what they 'should' do.

On the language issue, specifically, we have more than 100 languages spoken in this country. There are areas where Polish is the primary 'other' language, areas where it is Korean, Chinese, Russian, German, etc. In order for this country to be a single country and society, everyone needs to know English to communicate with everyone else. Lack of communication is a bad thing. Including in that it breeds lack of tolerance on all sides.

Every immigrant to America should learn at least basic English to get around and conduct their daily business. Not everyone in this great nation speaks your specific language, but most everyone here does speak English. Since communication is the most important thing in life in general, learning the language of the nation you are immigrating too is just a common courtesy.

At the hospital I work at, our Ultrasound tech immigrated here 12 years ago from the Ukraine. She didn't speak a word of English when she got here, and now her English is perfect (except for her thick Russian accent). Yet I know of many Mexicans who have been here for 20 or 30 years and still don't know a lick of English.

The problem is this... we in America have let certain groups of people have the privilege of conducting their personal business in their native tongue while forcing other groups of people to learn English or fall behind. Most notably, there is a lot of bilingual education for people who speak Spanish, but very little, if any, bilingual education for people who speak Chinese, Korean, or Japanese, even though Asians are one of the fastest growing immigrant groups in America.

It is discriminatory to allow the Mexican immigrant to conduct his business in Spanish, but to NOT allow the Chinese immigrant to conduct his business in Mandarin or Cantonese. Either we make ALL languages available to conduct business in, or we make NONE of them available and all business is conducted in English.

I REFUSE to be discriminated against because I'm Korean and I speak an Asian language, while the Spanish speaker is accomodated by the government and everyone else.

Interesting.asked and answered, nothing like a closed mind.

Yes, every immigrant to America should learn English enough to conduct their personal affairs and read traffic signs, and public alerts, etc. It's polite , proper, and responsible.

When I traveled Europe, I had no expectations that I should be accomodated, and did my best to pick up as much of the language and local customs (as not to offend my hosts) as possible.

It should be their mission to make it their first language since they made the choice to make this their home. Not learning the language is what keeps people from achieving the dreams that brought them to this country. I, too, am an immigrant. I came to the US as a child and not learning the language of my new country didn't even occur to me.

i can work out the two factors to this. human beings forget approximately that, for immigrants from non-English speaking countries, English *is* a distant places language and custom! on the different hand, gaining information of a language methodically from scratch develops analytical and cognitive skills, facilitates memorization, etc. additionally, the greater languages you recognize, the greater of an asset you would be interior the business enterprise international.

I think tha's the best way to achive a decent life in a foraineg country. Otherwise, you are just surviving around.Without the lenguage skills, you can not aspire to well paid jobs or even enjoy simple things such as watching TV, listening to the radio or reading. If you don't learn to write and read English properly, You are very limited in comunication and could be taken advantage of very easily

Yes, I do believe so. If I moved to another country, one of my first priorities would be to learn the language so I wouldn't be a burden on the society. I wouldn't want the country to waste precious resources on providing me with materials in my native language when I could easily use what is already available if I learned the language.

In my mind, it's a matter of respect for my new home and consideration for my new country.
