That's odd, I just spoke with my wife about what to do on her 30th, I suggested a cruise but she said she just wants an IPOD. I swear I have the bestest wifey ever! LOL

Try googling 'Ice Hotel', its one place I want to go with my missus and looks out of this world. There are a few places that do it, Sweden and Canada being quite famous.

Almost all of the hotel is made from ice and obviously has to be rebuilt every year which means its a fairly unique place to stay and is never exactly the same. The beds are made from ice too with real fur coverings and is apparantly not as cold as you would expect!!

Bookings are only normally taken for 2 or 3 days at a time (dont quote me) although the rest of your stay is spent in a log cabin in the snow covered forset nearby. If you're lucky and pick the right place you can go and see the famous 'Northern Lights' and even go on a dog sleigh ride.

I hope this helps when deciding, and if marriage is in the pipelines then its a good place to propose and some places even have an 'Ice Chapel' where you can get married.

Enjoy.

Depends when the birthday is, for one thing. I wouldn't go back to Venice any day for a romantic trip, and even Paris loses some of its magic when it's raining.

So if it's in our winter (it seems like that's any time between now and next May!), the suggestions of the Maldives and a (Caribbean) cruise are good ones. My tip for cruises is don't bother paying the extra for a balcony, as you will never use it enough - there's too much going on to waste time on that tiny bit of space outside your window!

We don't know your budget either, but if you are loaded(!), I would suggest a trip to Dubai staying at the Burj El Arab. If you can't justify that hotel, then any of the 5-star beach hotels will do very nicely.

PS re Pat C's answer: I agree with the tip about avoiding Carnival & Princess. And of course, with cruises as compared to Las Vegas, you can still see a different show every night (albeit not quite as lavish as Caesar's Palace!), go to the casino every night, and still enjoy different scenery every day.

PPS I've had another idea! Does she like shows? How about casually asking her if there are any London shows that she has always fancied seeing? Then you could do a trip to London, but make sure you use First Class rail travel (if possible - you don't want to drive), a 5-star hotel, and the best seats you can get.

There is NO trip better than a cruise! No driving, you unpack once, your "hotel" takes you to extoic islands, your treated like royalty, wonderful food, great entertainment can't be beat! Some cruise lines even include the cost of your drinks now.You go to Vegas for gambling, you do that and see a show then what? Your still in Vegas the next morning. On a cruise your at another beautiful island the next day. There are exciting things to do on shore to.I can guarantee you it will be her most memorable birthday!

Forget Paris, way too expensive. It's been done too many times already.

A weekend in Barcelona is a must.

Nice weather, great restaurants, great nightclubs ( Take her to La Terrrazza, poble espagnol, near plaza d'espagna), lovely people, romantic squares ( a walk around the Barrio Gothico in the evening).

Easy Jet fly there from a few UK airports so it shouldn't cost much.

A nice budget hotel is the Hotel Ingles right in the centre of the action, but still quiet enough to sleep well. Spacious rooms and polite staff for around 50 pounds a night for a double room with en suite.

Depends on the budget really.
Paris
New York
Venice
for something a bit cheaper why not Dublin or London, although I don't know where you are from so if you live in London that wouldn't be a good idea. How about a secluded cottage in Scotland all on your own?

In a roundabout way, ask her where she would love to visit. She might get an inkling that you are going to surprise her with a trip and will probably choose somewhere affordable, then she will be so excited that she will be extra extra nice to you. Everybody wins. Good Luck.
