An altar is a table used for sacrificing (killing) animals or people. In Genesis, Abraham built an altar so he could sacrifice his son Isaac.
I don't know why in the world a Christian church would have an altar, but they're all over, aren't they? I mean, pick one or the other: cross or altar? But both? Come on. Either one means sacrifice.

An altar is a place of sacrifice, as in the old testament.
The christian altar is symbol for Christ as on the cross he was both priest and sacrifice.
On the altar is offered to God the christian sacrifice ie. the body and blood of Jesus together with the prayers and sacrifices of the faithful.
