No, my husband has been bulimic for over 25 years and he has always been slightly to moderately overweight. I read somewhere that unless you are literally purging within minutes of eating your body adjusts to this abuse and gets more efficient at absorbing the calories...plus, people with this binge/purge behavior tend to eat way more than they realize. My husband...on a normal night...will eat an entire box of cereal, 4 or 5 granola bars, 1/2 regular size jar of peanut butter, and whatever fruit we have around (2 or 3 oranges, 2 or 3 bananas...whatever)...this is a lot of calories in one sitting...he will do this from about 9:00 pm to midnight. This is more calories in a three hour period than most people need in an entire day...he may keep half of this down but purge whatever is still in there closest to midnight. He also eats a large dinner (which he may or may not purge), lunch, and drinks about 600 calories worth of mochas first thing in the morning. He gets more than the recommended daily calories for any adult even though he purges.

Throwing up is not a diet plan...this behavior is an addiction that causes mass destruction on a person's body. If you know someone who is just starting to exhibit this behavior you need to speak up because it only gets worse over time and becomes harder and harder to treat. I have only been married to my husband for 7 years and never really put two and two together with his behavior until just a few months ago. It is so ingrained in his person to have this behavior that I don't even know where to start with it now...but I know that one day he will die from complications that were brought on by bulimia...

Unlike Anorexics, Bulemics are often not skinny, and it can often go unrecognised because of this. I was Bulemic and I was only slightly underweight - normal. Because Bulemics go through periods of binging/purging or starving, this often means they don't lose much weight, because the combination balances out the number of calories they receive.

For example, if a Bulemic was to eat 5000 calories one day and then starve themselves for 2 days, this would balance out the number of calories over a three day period, equalling around 1,500 calries per day. An Anorexic may continually only eat less than 500 calories per day, so they will often lose far more weight.

However, don't think this means that Bulemia is any less serious. It can cause severe health problems including digestive disorders, fertility problems, rotten teeth, hair loss, liver damage, amongst other things.

Hope this helps clarify things.

You ought to speak to her father and mother and convince them that she desires remedy to recuperate. If they don't get her help, she's going to just keep getting worse and she or he may kill herself. She is already lovely bad off if she is throwing up blood. She could have developed an ulcer that is bleeding. Once I used to be 15, I had an eating disorder and was throwing up so much that I gave myself a bleeding ulcer. I had to be rushed to the emergency room and the doctors told my dad and mom that if they had gotten me there half hour later, it could have been too late and i would have bleed to death. If you do not need the same factor to happen to her, you ought to get through to her parents NOW! Absolutely her mother and father don't know very a lot about eating problems if they're hoping she is going to "get better on her possess". I'd endorse doing some study and bringing her moms and dads some info on the field, and take a look at to provide an explanation for that it's virtually inconceivable to get well from an eating disease with out psychological and behavioral help. I really hope that her parents will take heed to you, but if they do not attempt to go to the tuition and speak to them about all of this. I shall be praying to your daughter's friend to make a riskless recovery. Excellent luck!

No, as soon as food is swallowed most of the nutrients enter into the bloodstream. Therefore, even if they through it back up, it's like they ate it. Another sign to look for is thin hair and purtruding glands on their neck.

The bulimics you're talking about probably aren't vomitting enough after they eat. Hence, a lot of what they eat is being stored as fat.

They can eat very high-caloric foods before they purge. The food could be partially digested before then, so it could contribute calories. Also bulimics don't necessarily purge all the time.
