MARICOPA COUNTY, ARIZONA (Phoenix and area)

We are home to the "Toughest Sheriff in America", Joe Arpaio. Chain gangs, living in tents year round, two (bad) meals a day, no rehabilitative programs, no recreation, limited visitation, and severe overcrowding makes these jails unbearable.

Understaffed, over-populated, and out dated facilities make this a dangerous jail. Death and injury are common. The Sheriff assumes no responsibility for anything. His idea of corrections is to make everyone wear pink underwear. Even the handcuffs are pink!

Organizations such as Amnesty International, NAACP, and many Inmate organizations have publicly condemned this place. Read about it at Rip Off.com for a better idea of the conditions here.

No jail I have ever been in is a good place. As far as lack of creature comforts, I would imagine the tent city jail in the desert in Maricopa County, AZ is probably right at the top of the list.
