By accepting Yahshua as your savior you are saying "yes" to your inheritance of eternal life. In this you are a new creation as the spirit man in you is awakened and i guess the best explanation of it is in the book of genesis. "And into his nostrils God breathed the breath of life" this is not the act of breathing but the breath of eternal life. In that we become a new creation, one that is capable of being one with the creator. Without this we simply die when our heart stops beating and brain stops functioning. Upon the final judgement day when your name is not found in the book of life you will be separated from your creator and made to cease to exist anywhere. This is eternal damnation. If you accept the Judeo-christian path of life.

Because He said so. "God is not a man that He should lie...."
You will find yourself convicted each time you do things of 'the old nature' because you're a new person. He said "old things have passed away..."
