Because it's their instinct to do so. I have a male dog named Skippy and he marks his territoy all over the place. I guess all male dogs do this. So don't be surprised if your dog pees everywhere. It's just the instinct that the dogs seem to have. If your dog doesn't mark it's territoy, it might just be shy or a coward. It's no problem. It all depends on the dog. So don't worry.
To answer your question again: its their instinct!

This is a simple question that gets kinda complicated at times. The basic thing is the need for territory. Almost all carnivores, and a great many others, require a couple basic items. The first two is food and reproduction. In dogs it's a pack instinct to know who is in the area (or is new and maybe doesn't belong there) and of course who is in season. This is not going into Alpha critter, and if you think the people in the house are automatically this you ought to watch the interactions between dog and owner a bit more, or how they work this out without going into the bluffing ceremony that often decides this. In essence it's instinct working to express some control over the enviorment. And if you think dogs have been screwed up you might consider house cats which under normal conditions wouldn't get within sight of each other without an immediate challenge to fight.

Ever see dogs stopping to smell a certain tree or a fire hydrant where other dogs have peed?? Marking for dogs is a form of communication. It says "I was here, this is MY territory..stay away!" Other dogs come along, smell this 'message' and cover it with one of their own. This is actually a form of communication among dogs...thank god we humans have cell phones!

In fact, it is not only male dog who "marks" territory. My friend has two dogs, male and female, female one pees every square meter. I sometimes wonder where does she get so much urine to "mark" her territory! :)
