He is a caricature, a stereotype, but like all the best satire, the Simpsons are only a slight exaggeration of the subject they are satirising. I know people like Ned, and I can recognise many of his traits - basically well meaning, uncomfortable with themselves because they recognise at some unconscious level the essential dumbness of things they really want to believe in. The Simpsons is Neck and Neck with South Park as the smartest thing to come out of the US in years!

I'm a Christian, go to church on sundays, read my Bible (almost) daily, and I have to say I am not at all offended by Ned. So what if he's portraying Christians in this way? Sheesh, if we can't take a harmless little caricature like that our faith won't stand up to much, will it?
A while back I did a series of discussions called The Gospel according to The Simpsons with some people from the church I go to. We watched an episode which had some sort of 'religious' theme to it and then talked about issues that threw up. It was a laugh as much as anything else. From that, it became obvious that whereas Ned Flanders is one of the more blatant stereotypes on the show, The Simpsons takes the mick out of just about every section of society/ethnic group/religion in sight. It's great, and I will continue to enjoy watching it.

Love the show. Ned is a puritanical, ritualistic, bible thumper. And over time, Mat created a warmer side of Ned. Ned & his family just had an overwhelming need to do what was right. We all get carried away over something, and Mat has a way of making us laugh at ourselves when we do. Drinking, donuting, whatever. Laugh and be happy and the world will laugh with you, sang Farmer John.

As a Christian, I find it a little offensive, but I also think it's good for us to look at ourselves through the eyes of non-Christians. Ned Flanders is a ridiculous caricature, and you couldn't pay me to spend time with kids like that, but I'm sure I act that way sometimes. I know some of the other people in my church do. It doesn't mean their Christianity isn't genuine. Some people are just annoying.
Having characters like that in the media does give Christians a bad name, but instead of ranting and raving about it, we should be proving the legalistic and hypocritical stereotypes wrong.
I think Marge is probably a more accurate representation of your average Christian in America. She's a mom who drags her family to church, tries to teach her kids to be good people, tries to monitor the TV they watch, their grades, etc. She volunteers, cooks dinner every night, helps her extended family members, blah, blah, blah. She also gets frustrated, angry, hurt, and loses her temper.

well, i'm christian, but i'm not offended by the way Flanders is potrayed because there ARE Christain religions that have rules very much like, if not exactly like Ned's. The Simpsons is not saying all Christains are... i can't even explain it without using the word "Flandarsish", but it does point out that some christians are like that, which some are.

I saw the Simpsons a couple of times and just found it very adolescent, very immature humour. So I wasn't surprised at their uninformed view of "the" Christian family on the series. It's common to anyone who hasn't thought analytically or observed more than one or two examples of any culture or belief, and that superficially. I hope not too many people take their worldview from the Simpsons, on this or any subject.

no longer something incorrect with that see you later via fact the episodes are defined and the scholars are waiting to make counseled judgements with regard to the presentation. I fairly have watched a number of those episodes and might locate discrepancies to what's in scripture which might prefer to be open for communicate with the scholars to be sure they're getting a suited scriptural view. that's continually stable to open up communicate on the favored media to offer pupils the two components so as that they are able to have counseled critiques while convictions are challenged. fending off each little thing that's put in front of youngsters only serves to shield them from the real international yet does no longer equip them to shield their faith constructively.
