I like camping at Castle Crags State Park near Dunsmuir, California. Even though you do hear the traffic from I-5, the Sacramento River is right across the highway and it makes for some cool rafting. Just buy an inflatable boat for about $50.00 and have at it. Cart the raft up the river a ways along the trail, put in, and have a wonderful cruise down the river. Theres' some Class II whitewater, but nothing you can't handle. Heck, one time we screwed up and went down the rapids backwards, laughing our fool heads off. When you get to the rope bridge, get out and do it again. It's a real blast.

The Santa Cruz Mountains area is great! Lots of Redwood trees and easy access to the beach too. There are many little towns, and state parks in the mountains with great places to camp, hike, fish, etc. Take Hwy. 17 off of Hwy. 1 on the west/coast, or take Hwy.17 off of Hwy. 101 on the east from San Jose. Have fun! :)

Not far from Crescent City is Jedidiah Smith Redwoods State Park..I have traveled all over this country and a good part of the world and that place is still the most incredible sight I have ever seen... I would try to describe it for you but that would only do an injustice..
