I would have to know more before I could truly say what is too much. What is the name of the pain killer? Is 120 the amount of pills or the mg per dose? There are pill books that will tell you what is the typical amount perscribed. These are listed below.

Also it depends on why your friend is in pain. A lot of Dr's tend to give out pain pills like candy just to shut people up and for the repeat business. They dont really do a whole lot with most pains. If it were for say a tooth then yeah but for injury type pain your friend may benefit better from a non narcotic muscle relaxant. A good example is Flexoril. Your friend would have to take it about every 4 hours as perscribed to build a level but once that level is up they can live pain free without being zombied as with pain killers. This allows the patient to participate in physical therapy and thats what makes the injury heal so that some day soon they will be able to live medication and pain free. Until the level is built up they usually perscribe Ulteram which is also a muscle relaxant. Together your friend would get the best sleep they have ever had. Its also non narcotic and non addictive.

If it's too much, a `red flag' will go up when the pharmacist sees the prescription. A year ago, a pharmacist declined to fill a prescription (for pain-relieving medication) for me because she had filled a similar prescription just a few days earlier.
I really didn't need the prescription at the time as I still had a few pills from the earlier prescription, rather, I was trying to save myself a trip to the pharmacy in a day or two.

That prescription is only for 4 pills per day. A doctor can write a prescription for one months worth of medicine at a time. How many that is depends on the state.

My state seems to have this limit of 80mg per day when it comes to vicoden, in TX it is 180 but the limit is 12 pills so they have a more powerful pill in TX than is in any other state and is specially made in local pharmacies.

At one time I was getting 8 pain pills per day, that is 240, the last time I was on a short lasting one, Vicodin I was getting 120.

Pain Clinic doctors typically write very large prescriptions. Mine writes me 90 Oxy IR and 60 Oxycontin per month. 120 pills is one pill, every 6 hours, for 30 days. That's extremely resonable.
