if you are almost done just finish and don't tell anyone... if you do you will have to pay for the permit... pay a fine and if there is anything wrong... you will have to have a contractor come and fix it... then you will have an audit on your house so your taxes will go up. If you haven't done it... don't tell anyone...

good answers , but another thing that can/will happen as it happened to my neighbor,he also finished his basement with no permits, then it flooded so here is the deal...he didnt get a permit..so he was never inspected for code issues/compliance therefore his finished basement was not considered insured as he remodeled without permits....seems as though ins, co. cant legally insure an addition/remodel unless you pulled permits and passed an inspection

I had a contractor redo my basement and told him to get all the permits we needed. I wanted to make sure it was done properly and wiring and plumbing were all inspected before the drywall went up. It gave me peace of mind but it did make my taxes go up.
No doubt you would have to take down the drywall if you got a permit now.

Naughty, naughty!
Move to the south, where we can remodel without building permits, because no one cares if you get your home inspected, or if you have any type of insurance on it. It has just recently become mandatory to have a septic tank, if living out of town!
Talk about backwoods....!!
Seriously, take the inspectors advice and go get that permit now..!!

They can red tag your house and make you tear it out and do it again if you want to keep it. Also, if you try to sell your home they will make you do it then and you will not be able to sell it until you tear it out and put it back the way it was originally. Exactly like the land and house description reads. Where do you live?
