The advantages to a ported box (box with hole of some sort) is that a given speaker with a given amount of power will play lower tones at a higher volume. However, they will also play higher tones at a lower volume. And sound quality will be reduced, that is, the bass will not be as tight, it will be more loose and flowy. Also, a speaker in a ported box requires more power, if I'm not mistaken, but I could be. Anyways, it depends on your preference. If you listen to a lot of rap music with crazy bass, then go ported. If you listen to any other type of music and want the system to have good sound quality, go sealed.

Speakers with a port will get louder, assuming the ports and box are designed correctly.
I beg to differ LOW. I understand the mechanics behind how a speaker interacts with the ear, and I also agree that what sounds good to me may not sound good to someone else, but to state that speakers do not "make sound" is ludicrous. If the speaker is not making sound then what is? Would the brain interpret anything if the wires were just hooked up to an amp and the other ends left bare? Of course not. Speakers make sound waves, otherwise known as sound.
You also have a completely backwards logic. A watt is a watt. I don't care what amp it comes from. You can hook to completely different speakers up to an amp, and easily hear differences between them. If you hook two different amps to the same speaker, and MATCH the output you will be hard pressed to hear any difference between the amps.

ported is what they call a box with a hole. and yes, most of the time if the box is designed for the speakers that are in it, it will sound very loud. also you should know that the best speaker in the world, wont sound to good in the worst box in the world. but the worst speaker in the world wont sound bad in the best box in the world. thats just to let you know how important boxes are for subs.
hope this helps.

First Speakers do not make sound! Before you pass judgment, show me a speaker that makes sound and lets you and I patent that speaker and get rich! From where in the speaker should it manufacture sound?
We connect them to the Audio system with wires. Pray, do not tell me that sound travels through wires. If so we need to get rich!
A speaker enclose with out a port hole requires more energy to function compared to one with a port hole.
What YOUR audio experience will be in either case, cannot be defined by someone else. Your values are YOU, my values are ME! You cannot use my Audio experience to validate YOU audio experience.
What do you want from the speakers? They only set air in motion! Your ear drum and inner ear and brain creates YOUR audio experience. Your amplification systems performance is of more importance than speaker enclosure.

Here is some information on different types of boxes and other info:

______________
LOW isn't very bright with his "Speakers do not make sound" comment.
If speakers don't make sound, how come I can tell where the sound is coming from with my eyes closed? Because the sound is coming from the speaker, not my ear drum!!
Your ear drum and inner ear and brain are defective.
Do us all a favor and be silent, don't make a sound!

the reason boxes are sealed is to give better response. Yes it will take more energy to move the speakers, but I think that overall a good sealed sub sounds better than a good ported sub.
