Soak your feet in warm water, you may add Epsom salts or betadine/iodine to the water to cut down on infection. Use an orange stick or cuticle stick to lift the ingrown nail up to keep it from growing down into the skin. Do this daily so it will gradually grow outward. If it is already infected you will need antibiotics. In the future do not cut your nails curved down on the sides so they do not grow downward. No tight shoes.

A very painful, but effective treatment is to get small strips of cloth that will not leave pieces (such as polyester) and use the cloth to go from the middle portion of the nail, under the overgrown part, and out the side of the toenail. Replace the cloth every morning and night. Each night, remove the cloth, clean the area, and soak it in Epsom salt water. Also remove before showering.
Continue this method until the ingrown portion grows out over the edge of your toe. Then be very careful about cutting your nails so that it is even with your toe.
Good luck.

It depends on a number of things. Cutting the toenail right in the first place is one thing. Filing the edge of the nail so that the pressure is off it is another.

I had one on both big toes, eventually you get them removed but in the meantime you make a V in the mddle of your toe with clippers, you clip a V in your toenail to relieve the pressure from both ends, also soak in epson salt to soften the nail and the skin to relieve pressure.

My granny always said it helped if you cut a V in the middle of the toenail. Don't know if it works though! You can prevent hang nails by not cutting your nails to short, and cutting them straight across instead of round.
