If your city has a hazardous waste disposal or a recycling program, call them. In the South Bay, there is a TV recycling center located in one of the Apple buildings in Cupertino that takes in old electronics for recycling. There may be something similar in the East Bay.

Offer to give it to a local repair shop for spare parts. They might even pick it up for you. Or sell it on eBay for $1 as a non-working set with local pickup only. Some tinkerer might take it and you are only out a few bucks for the auction fee.

If you call the city department or contractor that hauls your refuse they will likely be able to put you in touch with a state run agency that deals with hazardous materials such as batteries, printer cartridges/toner, motor oil, and televisions. That is what we have here in California and the cost is free.

Call your waste disposal company: http://www.concorddisposal.com/.

It needs to go into hazardous waste, so they won't just pick it up with the normal trash. You can call them for a special pickup of the tv.

Look in the newspaper or phonebook, there's a lot of people that'll buy it cheap, or take it. They like to fix things up and resell them. Otherwise, depending on your trash pickup, just chuck it...
