Thou shalt not kill seems simple but maybe not. God was always telling his people to kill others, ( EX : Cannanites) so maybe he meant thou shalt no MURDER, which is unauthorized killing.
I assume he was referring to other human beings but maybe he meant only other Jews? does this rule mean that the state cannot kill a murderer who is convicted. is capital punishment unchristian? if it is OK to kill certain people or in certain situations, should not god have spelled it out a bit more for us? Maybe abortions are OK with GOD? Maybe that is one of the situations he allows. does GOD want bastards to be born?

If you look in the Thompson's Register and look up "follow the law", anyone will be directed to the part of the New Testament where God told people to follow the law and obey the authorities or suffer the consequences. The Bible also says in Ecclesiastes that there is a time to die and a time to kill. God says what He means and means what He says. Many people believe that they only should believe in the New Testament but go around spouting Old Testament stuff and that is wrong. That old saying "An eye for an eye" is Old Testament and does not hold water anymore but people go on quoting it because they like to justify their hate and need for revenge and that is a fact. It is also a fact that the Bible distinctly says that people have to obey the authorities or "fall under their sword". If a person kills another, God knows the reason and if it is a thing that He deems OK, then it is OK. When a person kills another, the killer knows if it is wrong or not. Their hearts will tell them so.

No it means murder. War so your Country can survive like Israel had to do and still has to do doesn't fall under that. Sorry, nice try to find out some dirt on God.

What you see is not as real as God. What you see should prove to you their is a God. If you try and tell me we just became without a creator then you need to go rethink some things. Ask an athiest How the whole universe came about to exist and I mean every galaxy and every star, also the ones still forming. Ask how the earth has one set speed it to turn and one set speed to rotate around the sun. Also the sun is just at the right distance for life to be sustained here on earth which includes billions of diverse lifeforms (That according to athiest just popped out of nowhere or crawled out of the Ocean). Where did the Ocean come from then?. Also ask them to get an empty glass and set it up in their house and go back to the glass 20 or 30 years or more if needed and see whats in it..........you know what would be in it? Still nothing. You have to have a Creator and it scares them. Also for the big bang theory supporters........where did the material that went bang come from and the energy to make it go BANG? I'll tell you God created it and he may have made a "BIG BANG" out of it to put it where he wanted it. I won't dispute that because the Universe is still expanding. All in all the athiests have to many questians to explain themselves that the Bible already explains. I'd rather believe there is a God and die and if there isn't I lose nothing but if there is and I've argued to people he isn't then I would lose alot. Think it over friend. Are you really sure about denying God?

Here's what the translation notes of the NET Bible has to say about this commandment in Exodus 20:13.

The verb רָצַח (ratsakh) refers to the premeditated or accidental taking of the life of another human being; it includes any unauthorized killing (it is used for the punishment of a murderer, but that would not be included in the prohibition). This commandment teaches the sanctity of all human life.

Conclusion: It means do not murder.

You show you ignorance of the Word of God by the message you are trying to spread. You fool. Do you think we don't see the wolf hiding under that ridiculous impression of a lamb skin you are wearing.
If you really want the truth, go to the well and drink.
The New Testament was written for the most part in the Greek language. The Old Testament in the Hebrew.
Murder is the answer to your question.
Don't ever think to correct God you filthy bag of water.
I'm hard on you with my answer to your question, but you are still alive. Doing what you are doing with God will be the death of you.><>

The Ten Commandments are Old Testament.... Jewish Law, An eye for an eye and all that. God struck more than a few people dead Himself (I guess the rules don't apply to Him) and he demanded burnt offerings (dead animals) as the only acceptable form of worship so I guess sanctioned killings are okay, but in general I think he meant don't kill other people without a really darned good reason.

Oh come on, don't be an intellectual midget.

The Israelites, like any group of people who claim that God is on their side, took license with the moral laws that they believed their God had handed down to them. As the most powerful people group in the eastern Mediterranean at the time, the Israelites were able to do battle with and destroy their foes. For the Israelites, military victory led them to believe that God had found favor with them; it's a common, even understandable reaction among a group of people.

That doesn't make it right, though. I don't believe that God ordered anyone to kill the Canaanites, nor do I believe that he was on their side (and against their enemies) in battle. God abhors bloodshed, no matter what the authors of the Bible may have been trying to convey in their ancient writings. Those writings reveal humankind's limited capacity to comprehend God's revelation to his people.

The English translation uses the word "kill." However, the Old Testament was originally written in Hebrew. The Hebrew word which was used is Ratsach, which literally means to murder.

God actually said, "Thou shall not murder."

You completely miss the point - God meant you should not Kill the faith of a person who has put their trust in Christ . Didn't he say , don't fear about the one who can kill your body , but fear the one who can kill your body and your soul " .

This life on earth is a drop of dew in the morning and fades away as soon as the sun hits it . But eternal life is the reward of putting your faith in Christ .

Yes there is the side of killing in battle ( as in many passages in the Bible ) In fact God and his heavenly armies killed the enemies of Gods people . And then the question of Murder . That is subject of intentional spilling of an others blood . God certainly does not condone killing in this manner . But the person who is murdered still has an eternal life . Life does not end as soon as the body dies . The soul continues to life , only God ( the one who created the soul can kill it .)

Many things to consider , but my first response is the best answer I can give to the question .

I believe that it should have read "You shall not murder". Which I think it different than killing. It's rather obvious that God approved going to war on multiple occasions.

Romans 13:1-7 explains that capital punishment is acceptable.

I didn't even read your question, but if you read the Old Testament, God killed LOTS of people..More than Hitler did.
So, I don't know how to explain the Thou shalt not kill thing in the 10 commandments.
