As far as hobbiest, yes there is everything from prop to jet model aircraft and helicopters, some of them you need a special license and special aerodrome to fly them legally.

As far as unmanned, yes we have those too, military uses them for scouting, bombing, targeting and spying.

As far as commercial aircraft, we can build an remote controlled commercial a/c however there is a safety factor involved that passengers would feel a little more at ease that there is trained pilots aboard.

Up till that day, the conventional plan to mitigate possibility of damage to passengers on an airliner became to allow the highjackers/plane crew to spotlight effectively getting to any destination and then to commence hostage negotiations. we've see many plane hijackings formerly and none have resulted contained in the disaster which we observed on 9/11. In maximum hijackings, the precedence became in a position to be managed in that the hijackers had demands. Negotiations would ensue, and certain, at situations disaster struck and human beings would die, yet not something like 9/11. the precedence on 9/11 extremely did ensue quickly. I imagine that that 1/2-hour became spent planning and attempting to figure out even what the intentions of the highjackers were. also, NORAD is about 2,000 miles away, even with the undeniable fact that there are AF bases in close proximity.

You can build a one for yourself as well. Try to search for Aero Modelling hobby. You get lots of books, lots of tool kits ready, which you need to assemble to make a plane. Or you will have to buy one from ebay or something which is costly option and you would not know krucks of the plane.
