Puppies are sold to pet stores by brokers...brokers by their puppies from puppymillers...people who breed litter after litter indiscriminately with NO regard to the animal to make a dollar! They will often sell truckloads of puppies to brokers who load them cage upon cage into unheated or uncooled trucks to transport all over the country to deliver to pet stores. Up to 50% of the pups die from diseases, malnutrition, dehydration and neglect before even arriving at the pet store. The puppies that do survive are sold to the pet stores ; some stores buy just a couple of each kind to ensure their 'product' being sold. Many, many puppies die at the pet store before even getting a chance to be purchased...disease is rampant in puppymill pups due to the close quarters they share during transporting and even at the mill. Please read this website and you will learn ALL and more than ever wanted to know about the horrible practice of puppymills! Never buy a pup from a pet store...they ALL Claim to buy them from local breeders...it's simply untrue 90% of the time; they are just covering their own a$$es and lying.

When my sister had her pet store, she got the puppies from local breeders. I know this because I met the breeders most of the time.
Sometimes, if she went to a pet show, there would be puppies there and she would get them. That's how we ended up with only a few.
The number of puppies depends more on the breed of dog.

Usually they do come from "breeders".
Hey guess what. My random dog just mated with your random dog and we got random puppies. We tried the "Free pups" thing but no one wanted them. Oh! I'll sell 'em to a pet store!
No reputable breeder would ever sell their dogs to a pet store. Pet stores will get them from dishonest people, always. Whether mills or breeders, they are of ill repute and breed poor dogs.

Pet stores order puppies like grocery stores order food. They get only what they think they can sell. A breeder is not solely committed to selling to one specific shop... if he has a litter of 6 puppies... he may have anywhere from 1 to 6 stores that want them.
Don't buy from pet stores... they are the reason there are so many abandoned pets. Adopt one. Past experience has led me to believe that a mutt is 10 times more loyal than a purebred...

The vast majority of petstore puppies are from puppy mills. Responsible breeders will NOT sell their puppies in pet stores. They want to make sure their puppies go to excellent homes, not to the first person who walks in with a credit card.

pet stores only buy a couple at a time of each breed they buy so as not to be "stuck" with a pup that gets too old to sell. they are usually approached by local breeders and offered the puppies the breeder doesn't sell. its best to go straight to the breeder if you can.

They come from puppy mills its a very bad place and the dogs are breed inn to close .Its not a good idea to buy from them .We need to put the mills out of buesness so they cant do the mean things they do to these animals.

puppy mills and breeders..
I wouldn't get one from a pet store though...
they usually spay/nuture the puppies too early before they're ready and they end up bleeding to death..that happened to my sister's pup that she got from the pet store.

I think the pet shops get what the breeders can't pre-sell before the birth. That explains there only being one or two. Usually breeders will try to sell the puppies before they're born... sometimes before they're conceived even! There are bound to be "left-overs" sometimes. Cute leftovers!
