I think the idea is completely plausible.
The species in the chain of life leading to modern humans' evolution were each their own stop on the way to here, even though none (or few?) of the higher forms were an end in their own right, except for humans.
Many people believe that the next step "up" in evolution is a spiritual one--or they see this after learning about evolution and sensing this change in themselves.
To change the human body so that it can communicate or sense on a new and different level means to change something physical--like introducing a new gene.
It's not surprising that this isn't happening to everyone at the same time. It may even be that most humans never get that new gene and so they stay in the present-day evolutionary stop. After all, not all species died out when new forms arose. Look at all the life forms around us!
This doesn't necessarily mean that people with this gene fulfill their genetic programming, because environmental programming also affects our development.
Does it mean that people without the gene won't "seek a higher power"? Maybe. That would explain why so many people are bogged down in religions. They see that there's a way to "God", but they don't have a clue how to do it themselves, so they follow the teachings of someone who DID know--but they can never understand the teacher's true message, so they resort to "faith", ceremony/ritual, rules, and misinterpreted writings.
They try to imitate true spirituality, but they're truly blind, apparently because they were born that way.

genetically to believe in a higher power will actually further evolution. religion would bring people together. you know what happens when people get together, babies. this could not be a single gene, it would have to be a gene group, and yes everybody has it. some peoples would be stronger than others, but it is all due to evolution.that is why an atheist has a harder time simply saying he does not believe and an easier time saying he is an atheist.

They will revise their opinion later. they always do. They will write a couple of books and make tons of money and appear on the talk shows. All this will happen without any real proof of this God gene.

it is entirely possible, we barely know anything about our own genetics so many things can controlled by them, even behavioral, emotional, and mental tendancies.
