i really like this guy alot, but so does my friend. he seems to flirt with me a lot but i don't know if that's just how he is, how do i find out what he thinks? should i ask, or would that freak him out?

I would get freaked out if you told me directly. You do want to make it obvious that your are intersted in a serious relationship and at the same time you don't. At one extreme you both fall in love with each other just by spending a lot of time together and therefore things might just fall into place, and at the other extreme you tell him how you feel. The former is unlikely, the latter is just a bad idea for several reasons.
In the middle then there lies charm and seduction. Charm him just by being genuinly happy with yourself by being yourself. After that be witty, or whatever angle you can play. Seduction would be something more like, accelerating those things that would naturally happen over time, but you otherwise don't have time for. So force a romantic get together with him, romantic enough to let him know that you choose such a place or event on purpose. Go alone of course. Foil any attempts that would lead to otherwise a group rather then a couple, because then it loses that 'date' feel. If you can get him to make the first move on you, I think you'll be golden. If you have to invite him half inebriated into your apartment, followed by more alcohol consumption possibly, dim lights, you know where it goes from here, I don't think you'd be well off in a relationship, even if the guy falls for you the morning after.

hey, just have some other friends to help u out that know the both of u. have them ask if he likes u and stuff. its another way to go than asking him ur self. if they tell u that he likes u the next move is urs and will be easier to make cuz u know he likes u. that what im doing but with a girl and not a guy. lol.

asking him would be the best way to find out if he likes you! i dont think it would freak him out, however it will give him all the control cos he will know that you already like him. if that freaks you out, flirt like mad back with him and somehow let him know you like him without so many words. goodluck
