At an electronics retail store, purchased a computer bag, wanted to know how it would fit 2 small computers, placed 2 iPods (enclosed in a plastic theft proof prevention box, which is about the same size as a small computer) which I was going to purchase in the 1st place, went to the sales associate to ask if they had the iPods in black (which took them forever to comeback), they said 'No.', so I placed the other iPod back on the shelf (but forgot about the other two in the bag), went to purchase the bag, walked outside, and their loss prevention staff stopped me and told me what had happened. I admitted nothing. Very embarassing, am a major contributor to the community, own a mortgage lending company, have a party rental company, and have an e-commerse business. I could lose it all if I don't wipe this off. I plan to plea not guilty, and hopefully appeal to the jury.

Keep your plea not guilty. Unfortunatley your case has gotten to far. what you should have done was explain that same story right away to the store manager. Your best chance now is to stick with that story. And be able to provide 1 or 2 witnesses that might be able to vouch for you. For example, were the iPods for someone who knew they were going to be BOUGHT. If so that person might be able to help you validate your story, at least to a point where yes you did indeed intend to purchase the iPods, but never to steal them. And hire a lawyer. He or she might use some kind of financial records to show that you had the condition to buy these items and not steal them. If all else fails, plea to the jury. Pick out anyone from the jurors who seem like they might have a memory who fails them at times : ) Good luck and God bless. Even if man's laws fail against you. He knows your heart and knows your righteouness : D

I do loss prevention for a major retailer in the north east, if everything you stated is true when you go to court with your record you should be able to plead to a lesser count. The reason it was grand theft was because of the amount of the 2 Pod's if it had been under a 150 dollars you wouldn't even of been arrested and just had to pay a fine generally with that given retailer. Ill be honest ive had one or two people give me that story when I've apprehended them but as a person who also obviously Ive never thought of doing something like that and as a good member of the community as you have stated you may want to you more common sense next time.

Wow! an Ipod is Grand Theft? That's tough. I urge you to contact a well-respected and discreet attorney and follow his advice. No harm, no foul. The store got the goods back and you should have little trouble getting probation IF you plead guilty as charged. I imagine your attorney will want to negotiate this to a misdemeanor stealing with perhaps a period of unsupervised probation. Perhaps some community service. You can expect to pay your attorney MUCH MORE than that iPod was worth, but the value of your reputation will make this little foray into the criminal justice system worth it. Call an attorney TOMORROW.

Tough break.

Hire an attorney to plead your case to the owners/supervisor of the electronics store.

Provide written testimonials from friends, business associates and prominent people around the community to your attorney, so that he can convince the owners that it was an honest mistake, and to drop the charges.

It would be a terrible mistake to appear before the Court In Pro Persona; you know nothing about court room procedure and the Rules of Evudence. Plus, an attorney can evaluate your case and advise as to your options.

Good luck!

The best way to fight this case is: PREVENTION.

Don't get yourself into the situation in the first place! Rational people don't just "place 2 iPods..." into a bag and simply forget about it.

In this state, even that is a crime -- concealing property not yet paid for. So even if you "get out" of the GT, you get a misdemeanor concealment charge.

Plea bargain to attend "stealing school" don't remember what it is called.

Best to have a lawyer do this. Contact legal aid if you can't afford a lawyer.
