Slowly. Start reading up what you can online but don't take any one thing that you hear too seriously as it's all very subjective. Find things that sound appealing to you. Look into it. Can't go wrong by studying here and there. Try websites like www.bondage.com and www.collarme.com but don't post too much personal info as you can just consider your profile on there to be 'testing the water' profiles. Talk with people. Explain to them just how new you are to it all. And don't give out any personal info until you feel that you have a good bit of knowledge as far as what you would like to try out and what you wouldn't, then from there; proceed with caution.

I posted this answer on another question, but it still holds true for this one.
-----
There are groups in every major city in US. People in these groups often set up training and education venues, and also offer guidance and mentoring depending on which end of the whip you want to be on. Also there is often a number of regularly schedule meet and greets called "Muches" that meet over meal in a non-threatening public venue (think restaurant).
In my local area (Detroit) there are several (10+) Munch groups of different ages and preferences, several groups that focus on education and many more people who are willing to teach.
Personally I do not recommend much reading on the internet because this is mostly fiction or unsafe practice methods. Get real input from the people who have done it in real life already. If you don't head this warning, and play with and hurt someone or yourself, people in your local community will pass the word that you are an unsafe player and then you will have a hard time finding local people to play with.
I re-recommend good education because knowing; how hard you can hit where and with what toy, or how long you can leave a limb bound in a certain position, or what type and how much humiliation you can use on someone, knowing these limits are good things.
If you need further assistance I can be reached via e-mail by this ID at yahoo.

This is one temptation you really can pass up. Just forget about it. In a couple of years you will see what I mean!
Hey, if you need a friend you can email me, we'll chat. You don't need to join in on something like BSDM to be accepted. I will accept you just the way you are.
Seriously!
