Misslabeled got it right!
If the organization is not-for-profit 501(c)3 then the donation could be tax deductible.
Please note, that if you are trying to claim a high dollar amount in value that you will need to substantiate that value and have a receipt from the organization stating the value (this would protect you in case of an audit).
Also, you need to be able to itemize your Federal Taxes in order for this to benefit you. I saw many a tax client disappointed that they couldn't deduct their $50 clothing donation or even $1,000 car donation from their taxes because it did not benefit them to itemize.

If they are prom dresses there is a non profit group that will take them in the Sacramento area called "Cinderella's Closet". They give prom dresses to underprivileged girls. Look at the following web address: (www.safeinsacramento.org/html/donate1.html)
for info on the organization and places you can drop the dresses off at.
For some reason when I post the web address, it cuts off the end of it: .../html/donate1.html

You can donate to virtually any company that carries a 501(c)(3) designation from the IRS. Most of them will be able to tell you if your donations are tax deductible.
