I think the word you are looking for is "process".
An artist works to express himself by way of a "medium". This medium could be paint, dance, music, acting. The goal is to finally create a "product".
The debate for artists is always "process vs product", working thru a medium an artist's process to create is honed and explored over and over again discovering more about themselves and different facets of the medium.
