Have you ever heard about a love story that about a poor young couple. The boy has only a pocket watch but it has no chains. And the girl has a beautiful long hair but no comb. The boy sold his only possession, the watch, and buy the girl a comb for X'mas. And the girl sold her hair and buy a chain for him. In a sense, they gave everything they got to each other.
Was it a fable or a true story ?

it's a fable- Bert sold his paperclip collection to buy Ernie a Soap dish for Rubber Ducky and Ernie sold his Rubber Ducky to buy Bert a tin for his paperclip collection, there's many versions of the story
