At my daughter's high school they are allowed to chew gum. Apparently it helps them to concentrate.

I just read in a magazine that cinnamon gum is best for keeping people alert and decreasing anxiety. Apparently it's the scent of cinnamon that helps.

I used to work over the summer as a high school janitor. One of the main reasons is because kids stick it to the bottom of the desks and it's gross, and the janitors have to clean it up. Would YOU like to clean up something that's been in someone else's mouth?

Also, I understand the reason for not chewing gum in SOME classes. It's inappropriate in an English class where you work on grammar, because it disrupts from natural speech patterns. Same also goes for speech class. You wouldn't get up and give a speech with gum in your mouth would you? Also, many foreign language teachers don't allow gum due to certain sounds that are made in foreign languages, chewing gum can produce an excess amount of saliva, and therefore can distract from the speech patterns, like in making gutteral sounds, there's too high a risk to either end up spitting the gum ON someone, or swallowing and perhaps choking (it happened in one of my spanish classes believe it or not)

Also, a lot of computer classes don't allow it because students, once again, take it out and stick it on stuff. If YOU had an expensive computer, would YOU want someone sticking gum on it? Probably not. So..it's easier just to disallow it everywhere. Remember, everything has a reason, whether YOU understand that reason or not.

Well I'm not saying you do it but alot of time as people don't know how to chew gum with out smacking, blowing bubbles or popping their gum. That can be very annoying especially when you are trying to study. Also gum is a pain in the but to remove from under the desk on the floor and under our shoes. Alot of people don't know how to throw their gum in the proper place a trash can.

Have you noticed that people of authority love to use it in about every way that they can? I bet that this is just one of those things. I realize that there are always the kids that are going to stick it under desks and abuse the privilege - but those are also the kids who will end up chewing gum in class regardless of the rules.

Maybe this is it - maybe not. As young adults in high school esspecially. There is no reason that a teacher can't just say " not popping bubbles or sticking youg gun anywhere but the trash can."

Just my opinion. Have a great night!

Because they're noisy & annoying, and some kids tend to develop bad habits by blowing bubbles and popped them. These things are just annoying, especially to people who do not like chewing the gum. That's why when teachers said, "if you gonna chew gum you may as well bring it for everyone." It's only fair to everyone in class.

Some people can be disgusting and leave gum anywhere that is one reason. Another reason is perhaps because some kids are too immature and will get into fights and might put gum in another student's hair. It is also rude to be chewing gum and blowing bubbles in class distracting everyone.

Chewing gum helps some people to concentrate but they don't always look good while they're doing it.
What do you do with the gum when you're meant to be answering a question or joining in a discussion?

The problem might be what to do with it when you are finished chewing the gum...ever look under the desks?

It is a sign of extreme mindlessness, like wearing the visor on a cap turned backwards, or getting a tatoo. If you want to increase your apparent IQ by 20-30 points in under one second, SPIT OUT THAT GUM!

i think that the rule should be, "if you let me see it, i'm going to make you throw it away. and if i find it under chairs and desks, you won't be able to bring it in here. " that way, you can chew your gum and teachers don't have to clean if off the bottom of chairs and desks.
