Sometimes airlines phase these things out due to changing of the times I guess. United used call its aircraft Friendship jets. So you would be flying say a 727 Friendship or 737 Friendship. Pam Am was always Clipper and their aircraft names all began with Clipper.

Hopefully you have already seen enough AA aircraft that you don't need the plane model described to you and can recognize what aircraft model is the one you see.

I used to work as a crew member for another major airline and I remember the "luxury jet" and "luxury liner" titles on American's fleet.

I think part of the reason for the removal is that -- for the most part -- the"luxury" is gone from air travel. Think about it...Is there really anything luxurious about flying on a "Super 80" or a "737" these days?

American probably didn't want to spend the money it would cost to reapply the titles with only the aircraft model names.

No, the engines run constantly during the flight. interior the case of economic airliners, whilst it comes time to descend in the direction of the trip spot airport, the engines are often set to idle, and the plane genuinely glides right down to its trip spot. it is performed because of the fact it extremely is the tactic of descent that makes use of the smallest quantity of gasoline. on account that modern-day jet engines do no longer probable make that plenty noise whilst they're idling, passengers might have the impression that the engines have stopped, yet they have not. in addition, the engines are throttled lower back drastically at specific factors in flight. almost immediately after takeoff, the engines are throttled lower back as quickly as the plane is obvious of all floor stumbling blocks, and the plane climbs greater gently in the direction of its cruise altitude. they're throttled lower back greater advantageous after cruise altitude is reached. And, as formerly reported, they're often set all the before to idle for the descent. opposite to what others here have suggested, airplanes (alongside with airliners) do no longer crash if all engines are became off—they only flow flow into opposite to the floor. From the viewpoint of gasoline economic gadget, the suited descent is performed with engines idle, however the engines at the instant are not extremely close down. some pilots evaluate it somewhat a private project to fly the finished descent in the direction of an airport devoid of ever advancing the throttles. no longer in basic terms does this use much less gasoline and supply a smoother journey, even though it additionally proves that the pilot is very solid at coping with the plane. ideally, the pilot contraptions the engines idle on the surprising of descent and would not might desire to the touch the throttles till only formerly this is time to land, yet often ATC interferes via asking the plane to point off a number of of cases during the descent, which demands that the throttles be moved out of the idle place, a minimal of briefly.

On an interesting side note, American Airlines modified the markings on their DC-10's after the 1979 accident in Chicago. Post accident, the "DC10" portion was removed, leaving only "Luxury Liner". This was apparently done to reduce the number of passengers making last-minute changes to avoid the DC-10's.
