Next time you see him, walk over and introduce yourself. Then engage him in conversation and find out what he's like. You may find that he's not so hot when he opens his mouth. Or you may find that the contents are even better than the package. Either way, you won't know until you talk to him... but hold off on asking him out until you do know.
