I am trying to house train my lab puppy. I dont have the money for crates are anything like that. He messes when we lay down to take a nap. But I take him out when I can. Can anyone give me some suggestions to keep him from going in the house?

This might help since you don't have a crate. Section the pup off in a room like a bathroom. Put down newspaper (really thick) When he pees or poops on it give him praise. Watch him and whenever he seems to start sniffing around like he wants to go pee take him to that same spot. When he gets used to using that spot move the newspaper to the door you want to take him out of. Dangle a bell from the door knob handle...When he sniffs the spot with the newspaper near the door. Immediately take his lil paw and ring the bell. Open the door for him and take him out. Keep doing this over and over until you condition him that ringing the bell means he will go out. My boxer pup rings the bell to go out to potty. He has only had 3 accidents in the house and he is 6 month old now. Oh remember that pups need to go our frequently. Especially right after they eat and right after they wake up from a nap. The more pee spots you have the more places he will have to sniff and have an accident. Take a black light (.50 at the craft store) turn off all the lights...the pee will illuminate...use a cleaner like Natures Miracle to clean the pee. Wish you luck..

I have had dos my whole life, I have three right now and my mother has two all five are rescues and my sister works for the SPCA as a Vet Tech ...
We've all found over the years that crate/cage training is really the only way to go .. now just because you don't have money for a crate per say doesn't mean you cant crate train ... go to your local grocery store and get as many large boxes as you can .. when it's time to take a nap leave the house or sleep for the night any time you cant keep an eye on the puppy ...
you have to remember that the puppy is like a baby it doesn't have the ability to hold it like it will has it gets older ...
hope that helps!?!

If you can't afford a crate, you can't afford to keep that dog. How will you afford shots and if he gets sick, then what??? There are used crates, check you paper, or section a small area off for him like others told you.

You can not ever leave a puppy unattended. If you left a 1 year old child alone without a diaper, what kind of mess would you have.

Please research crate training - and quick. Habits formed now, will only last, and you will never get these training days back.

I house trained my lab pup and your need several things: patiences, puppy pads or newspapers, and a constant spot for him to go outside. Your need to take the pup out about every hour and get him use to the spot and also give a word to it like go pee or whatever. If the pup keeps going in the house that means your not taking the pup out enough. After a while your get better at timing it. Also whenever they drink something take them outside cause it rushes through them like well water. haha. Hope this helps.

I personally would avoid using piddle pads and newspapers because it's going to be such a large dog you don't want him thinking he can use them when he's older. You can try using your bathroom as a type of crate, try blocking of an area that's just small enough for him to be comfortable because they are less likely to use the bathroom in an area they consider their territory. Whenever possible take him out as soon as he wakes up, after he plays, eats, and drinks. Also don't worry too much because bigger dogs potty train easier than small ones because they are more likely to view the whole house as their domain they don't want to mess up when they get older.

Having a puppy is a big responsibility. There is no "taking him out when you can". You must take him outside many, many times a day. If you are at work during the day, see if you can arrange for a friend or family member to come over and let him outside. Do not allow your dog access to food or water while you are away. This is not cruel!! Feed him once in the morning, then note to yourself how long after he eats that he needs to go potty. How long after he drinks does he need to go potty? Take him outside accordingly, and plenty inbetween. If this means you need to get up earlier to take care of the puppy that's just what you have to do. Then, while you're gone during the day take up the food and water. Put your puppy in a small area when you leave. The less room he has, the less likely he will be willing to use the bathroom in it. The bathroom probably works best. It will also be easy to clean up. If you see an accident, sternly say "Bad Puppy, No Potty Inside!" Don't strike or hit your animal. Or scream. Just take him outside ASAP and say "Good Puppies Potty Outside." When you get home, again feed him and put his water bowl back down. Go back through your mental notes and remember "puppy needs to potty 15 minutes after drinking, and 30 minutes after eating" or whatever's appropriate.Resist the urge to just let him go outside in a backyard by himself. If you don't go with him, you can't reward him for going potty outside, so he won't make the connection as easily. If he doesn't potty when he goes outside, make sure he stays with you when you are together in the house. Don't let him off on his own because he'll only go someplace where you can't see and have an accident. If that means walking him around on a leash until he potties than do it. If you see the warning signs that he is about to go to the bathroom (spinning, sniffing excessively, trying to squat) hurry him outside and say "Potty Outside" When he does potty outside, lavish him with praise and make a big deal about it. Give him a reward. And say "Good Puppy Potty Outside!" Simple words and sentences are best for training. When you go inside, say the word "Inside" so he knows the difference between outside and inside. Some puppies take a long time to housebreak. It could take months. Whatever you do, don't scream at your puppy or rub his face in his urine or feces. This will only make him fear you. If you find an accident, clean it up. But don't let him see you doing it. This will make puppy think he can make a mess and you will simply clean up after him. Put the puppy in the bathroom/area at nightime also, again with no food or water. If you need to get up in the night to take him out, do it. Make sure you keep reinforcing "Puppy Potties Outside."

I am curious where you got the money to buy a lab puppy but don't have money for a crate? Crate training is definately the best way to housebreak a puppy. But whatever.

at 3 months a domestic dog might desire to be able to hold its bladder for a million hour consistent with each month it somewhat is previous. so 3 months=3hrs 5months=5hrs till one 3 hundred and sixty 5 days. Take it out top after it eats and each half-hour to an hour. doggies do no longer sniff for a niche...they only bypass. quickly the domestic dog will learn the place to bypass and you will start up seeing a sniffing development start up. This takes time a sufferers. don't get mad on the domestic dog. Its in basic terms doing what it comprehend to do. in case you get mad and with the aid of it exterior it is going to start to think of that going out is a punishment, and not "ask" to bypass out. you ought to use the paintings NO to startle the domestic dog yet do no longer scold. What I even have completed became into to entice close a small Christmas bell down by skill of the floor and when I take the domestic dog out I ask "you % to bypass exterior" and in basic terms previously I placed her out...I rang the bell. Took some month yet now, whilst she has to bypass out she makes use of her nostril to ring the bell and that i enable her out....this is rather cool.
