I don't know how I found this site, but it has helped me retain Japanese. You should start by learning the hiragana and katakana, and then vocabulary. The practice sheets are printable and can help you practice writing. This might be a bit too big of a step at first, so you may want to come back to this site once you use other things on your own to learn the writing system and learn how to read it.

I don't know what age you are, but if you go to a college, and they have Japanese courses, by all means take them.

But I just met someone a few days ago. His Japanese was better than mine. I have been studying for three years in high school. He went to Japan for two years. Guess what? He knew NOTHING about the language and now, he speaks better than I do. I've been studying Japanese longer in school, but I've only been to Japan once. That proves that living there is better than simply learning it over here.

Hope this helps!

YES. Go to Japan. It is the BEST. I recommend in Tokyo, Yoyogi Park. You can go to a local library where they have audio tapes on how to learn a foreign language. They also have such tapes at COMP-USA
