I'm21yrs old, and I haven't been to the dentist in over 5 years. I am petrified of going, and besides having a normal fear of the dentist, I have MajorDepression, Borderline Personality D/O,and Gen.AnxietyD/O. I'm on 5 RXs 4 them, 1 of them being Xanax for anxiety. I could take 1 before going to the dentist, but I really don't want to be awake AT ALL.What determines if a patient needs actual dental surgery, a root canal or a regular extraction?

These are the problems I am aware of- my very last tooth on the bottom right is gone(by me) But before I took it out,it was only less then half of a tooth for about 2 years. Now, I'm not sure if I didn't get it all out, or if a wisdom tooth is growing but there is a piece of tooth in there. The very last tooth on the bottom left came out tonite (same story as just mentioned) My second to last tooth on the bottom right (which is now the last one) has a huge hole and hurts. The filling is out and only small piece of tooth is left. Emergancy appt is on Wed. but i'm scared.I have to be knocked out for them work on me... What should I do? What should I tell them on Wed. *if* I keep the appt.? Will they be sympathetic??

I know that there is a dentist that offers sedation-dentistry where I live. Try calling that 1-800-dentist number and ask if they have any sedation dentists near you!
Or... I found this website that helps you find a sedation dentist!!!

You want to go to a dentist who knows how to handle people who are scared. Perhaps some are better than others. You could look in the yellow pages or 1-800-dentists to find a dentist that specializes in scared patients. I would want to see some web sites as well to see what the range of treatments are for scared patients and I'd want to select one that sounds right for me.
You could call the dentist that you are scheduled to see and talk to someone at the office. Prior to visiting the dentist, I would discuss treatment options and the medications I am on to see if they are compatible.
Personally I find getting shots from the doctor a lot more stressful. Dentists numb the gums before they give a shot. Dental visits aren't fun and they can be uncomfortable but they really don't hurt.

call your dentist's office before you go in and let his office know your concerns. the will be sympathetic to your fears and anxiety and do whatever it takes to help you be at ease. and, if by chance, you do end up with a jerk of a dentist (you'll be able to tell after a phone call or two prior to this appointment) you go to a different one.
my daughter struggles with a brain disorder and i was concerned that she might have a difficult time. she isn't always the most patient, understanding patient that she needs to be. i didn't want a nasty, rude dentist for her. she had a root canal done and it went so well that i was very impressed with him. he really made sure that any pain was minimul for her. and he understood what fears and stressors might cause her to have a difficult time.
you'll get through it just fine. don't cancel. just ask questions and let the office know your fears and where you stand. they're use to all of us scardy cats! lol i'm in the process of getting work done... and it's been 20 years for me! ;-)

my advice from going to the dentist, having had a root canal.. and now maybe facing another since my tooth hurts currently.. and to think i used to enjoy the dentist. anyways all the teeth out/falling apart probally means bad cavities.. pain might mean root canal. but here the thing.. if it hurts tell the dentist they can give you numbing meds.. the shot hurts like a pinch (unless its the very front upper part of your mouth.. the muslce is tight here) and it works like magic. call the dentist let him know all that you told us about your teeth and that you have a fear of being at the dentist. If it doesn't hurt then it wont be bad. my dentist always educates me about tools teaches me what a cavity is and how different drills work.. maybe ask your dentist to explain or at least tell you what he is doing at all times. if you have to see an oral surgeon i have only had a good experience. i wasn't knocked out but i was given lots of numbing meds.. i couldn't feel a thing and it took forever to wear off but i loved not feeling it and they gave me a walkman thing to listen to so i wouldn't have to hear the drills.. and they have this thing to keep your mouth open so you odnt have to.. and yes you can still swallow.. so call your dentist explain your fears and go in knowing there is always numbing meds!!!!

Your dentist can give you a gas that will totally relax you. If you are going to get gas don't take Xanax ahead of time unless the dentist says it's ok. Most dentist's today are very sensitive the the fears of their patients and will go out of their way to make it as easy as possible for you.

It seem that if you are already on meds for anxiety, you should be OK. Just remember take your Xanax before the appointment and you should be fine. Psych yourself Up. Build up a fake sense of courage. Once you get in there - You'll see.. it ain't all that bad after all.

Dentist deal with people who are petrified all the time. Call the dentist and explain your situation. They are sympathetic and will do all they can to help you feel more at ease.

When things get tuff. I say to myself; it will be fine.
You'll be fine. Stop being so emotional and worried. Sing a song in your head.

Call your dentist and tell them. They can find you a oral surgeon and they will put you to sleep to have your teeth repaired.
