Two reasons.
a. The bones are a choking and splintering danger as everyone else has pointed out.
b. Too much 'people food' or human food as treats can cause upset stomach troubles in both, possibly bring on fatty liver disease symptoms and cats, and cause pancreatitis upsets in both.
If you take the chicken off of the bone and just feed the meat as a treat occasionally and make sure that they can't get the bones, and not huge amounts, I think you are okay. Believe it or not, with dogs, raw chicken necks are considered safe and are a major component of a dog feeding system called BARF which stands for Bones And Raw Foods, many people think that it is one of the best diets for dogs. For more info, just do a search on Bones And Raw Foods diet for Dogs and see ALLLLL that comes up!

The chicken is not an issue, so long as it is bland. Onion is not good for cats (not sure about dogs). The problem is the chicken bones. Bird bones are hollow. After the bones are cooked, they become brittle. If your dog or cat eats cooked chicken bones, they can splinter and hurt them.

Some cats have a problem with digesting large amounts of protein. It can lead to kidney failure. Once in a while is fine, just make sure it is boneless because cats will try and chew the bones, and when they splinter they can tear the cat's throat and stomach up.

Chicken bones are one of the many types that break and leave sharp edges. A dog or cat will not chew them into mush or powder and will end up with a sharp bone stuck in the inside of their neck.or it will cut up their stomach.
It is a bad move.. don't do it..

Yes, I have seen a dog die from getting a chicken bone lodged in his lungs...I was working for a vet at the time and got to help with the operation. Unfortunately the dog didn't make it.

Chicken bones are very brittle and when they break, they can be very sharp. A dog or a cat who eats the sharp bone pieces can poke a hole in their gut and die. Take the chicken off the bones before you give it to your pets.

They can eat raw chicken but not cooked chicken because cooked chicken bones can get caught in their throat or even shatter... so its not a very good idea to feed them chicken unless its raw

Chicken bones become lodged in their throats very easily, especially in dogs who tend to "wolf" their food down without chewing. The bones can splinter and stab them in the mouth and tongue also.

I know chicken bones are bad for dogs because the bones can splinter and cause harm in their throat, and intestines. I don't know why they shouldn't have chicken though.

it is because of the bones, they usually are small bones and they break and can cause major damage to the mouth throat and other organs, and it is hard for cats and dogs to break the bones down enough to swallow them safely, and yes i have seen animals have to go thru surgery for this and i have seen them die also... as some times it becomes lodged and cuts off air or it slices thru things if they do get it swallowed.
