I know where your coming from. My fear of the dentist prevented me from going for 12 years. I finally went about 2 weeks ago and had 6 cavities. I was anxiety stricken (having a severe phobia of needles from a tramatic accident when I was 3) before getting the cavities filled and I seriously couldnt believe how ridiculously nervous I had made myself. I was hyperventalating in the dentist chair and afterwords I was fine. I got all worked up for nothing. Just let the dentist and dental hygenist know of your fears and anxiety and they should be very understanding. Mine were very understanding, helpful. and as nice as could be.

There are dentists that specialize in fearful patients. I hope you're seeing one. You do not want to be put under general if it's avoidable.

If you're seeing a psychiatrist, ask him/her about tapping/rapid eye movement therapy. Something like that. It completely eliminated the panic attacks I had when I was having non stress tests when I was pregnant. It might be able to help you overcome your fear of the dentist.

I realize you are scared but it is no big deal. I just had a root canal and it didn't hurt at all. Just go to the dentist and relax ..,you will be fine. You will laugh at yourself for being so wound up. I suffer from anxiety and panic also. I know where you are coming from. Learn to control your mind and thoughts and don't let them run away with you.

GO TO THE DENTIST!!!!!

Don't worry dentists aren't that bad...they can put you under general anesthetic if needed and you can sleep through the whole thing....what ever it is they need to do

Just remember to take with you a list of ALL the meds you are on...you don't want anything mixing that shouldn't...

good luck

Check your phone book under dentists for those who advertise as "Painless Dentists". They will understand your fears, and will help you determine if the sedation you need needs to be a general anesthetic.

Discuss your problem with your dentist BEFORE showing up for your appointment. Many dentist can sedate you for the procedure.

If you are taking depression medication, make sure to notify your dentist. It may affect the amount of sedation he will give you to keep you safe.

if they won't put you under, then ask them to give you gas, and topical numbing stuff. I am petrified of dentists too and that is what they do for me... also when I am in the chair, I have my eyes closed and headphones on the whole time.

Ask them to knock you out, I dont think the dentist is worse than pulling your OWN tooth. Damn, that had to hurt...
