One should learn it if one is going to live in malaysia because it is not a common language like spanish. I speak it and never use it now coz I live in the US.
I am pretty sure you can find some books but it will be hard. What do you need to learn. May be I can help.
I am a malaysian who migrated to the US 5 years ago.
Here are the basics?
Apa Khabar? means How are you?
Khabar Baik? means I'm fine or all's well
Nama kamu siapa? means Whats your name?
Nama saya XXX means my name is XXX

You should come to Malaysia! I am born and bred in the UK but I am a Malaysian Chinese, but my Malay is just as good as any Malays in this country. Spend a month here and you'll get the hang of the language in no time!!

It is quite an easy language to learn and once you have learnt it, you will be able to speak Bahasa Indonesia as the context is very similar. I learnt it.
