You have a couple of options but your best bet is to go to the sites that I have listed below. (Rootsweb)
Scroll down until you see the Social Security Death Index
Click (or click on the second address I listed below)
Type the information you have into the appropriate fields. If you have more information you can click on the Advanced Search tab.
Scroll through the results until you find the appropriate listing for your friend. This will not give you the obituary but it will give you the COUNTY in which their death certificate was issued.
You can then search the newspapers that serve that county for obituaries for your friend.
Here is a shortcut: click on the third address below. Click on the search option and type in your friends name. There is no guarantee that it will be listed... after all, this site is run by volunteers. But if it is there, it will tell you in which newspaper the obituary was located.
Good luck.

Both the Detroit News and the Detroit Free Press have their obituaries on line. Go to either death notices or obituaries.

The best place to look is in that town's library. Most all newspapers should be kept on microfilm. From those you should be able to search the obituaries from the papers around the time of death.

Try completing a websearch of Michigan newpapers for that area. Once you find the website, complete a search on that person's name. If the obit was in the paper, it'll pull up.

Try contacting the town newspaper. Give them information such as name, age, dob, and date of death. They should be able to locate it for you. I am sure you probably have to pay for it, since they would have to go into the achieves to retrieve it. If you know anyone that lives in the area, have them go get it for you, and reinburse them for the fee.
