There are many dog breeds that could fit that but the Rat Terrier is my personal favorite. They come in 3 sizes-toy, minature, and standard. Rat terriers are very playful much like a Jack russel terrier-another good playful dog-. I have had three Rat Terriers and they were so easy to train! I left them alone while I was at school( fence yard...toys...food n water, etc) and neighbors said they didn't make a whimper! One downfall though, is that sometimes they can be a bit hyper if not properly excercised.
T
oy dog breeds include greyhounds, terriers, pinschers, pugs, chihuahuas, pekingese, spaniels--the official list of the AKC is quite extensive. Regardless of breed, toy dogs are desired for their cuteness and cuddle-ability. Many retain the characteristics of a puppy for their entire lives. This may be one of the big attractions that toy dog breeds hold over larger breed dogs
I have listed a site below that had helped me in the past; also a rat terrier page too if ya interested in that. Lol they are a rare breed...

i have a chihwinnie, and she's very lovable and playfull. She only weighs about 5 or 6 pounds. She barks to get your attention during play or cause she's havin so much fun during play. Other than that, she doesn't really bark much. She's fash cause of the long body from the dachshund, but because of the chihuahua, her legs are long, but have dachshund bow legs. She has soft chihuahua features, the dachshund tones down the bulging eyes and lenghtens the muzzle a little but her ears stand up like the chih but flap as she walks. Dogs who are a more active type versus lazy type, are easier to train because thier reaction is faster, so you can do more repetitions after another and the dog can catch on faster. She's a great mix! I enjoy her a lot! I got her through a rescue group called Pet Guardian Angel in El Paso, TX for $85 which included current vaccines, spay, and microchip. She's very inexpensive with food, heartguard, and flea meds. I highly reccomend a chihuahua/dachshund mix.

Most all dogs are playful as puppies. Miniature Pincers, Poodles, Chihuahuas, Pappillons, Pomeranians, etc are cool. They are extremely intelligent, protective, easily trained and funny. I don't recommend the Terriers. They can be destructive, hardheaded and very noisy. Terriers also have a low tolerance for obedience. Hope this helps.

I have had a few small breed in the past. i am partial to dachshund myself. They are smart, trainable, loving and playful. They are very low maintenance as far as grooming is concerned.
I have also had good luck with Jack Russel Terriers. They are very playful and love attention. If it is turned into a game for them training is a breeze.
Greyhounds or their smaller counterparts the Italian Greyhound are very quiet and low maintenance. They need a yard to run in and a warm bed to sleep in. They love to cuddle up next to you.
There are several breeds out there that may suit you. Do some research at www.akc.org to get a better idea of what may work best for you.

Most all little dogs bark. On second thought they are "yippy" and "nippy" meaning they are more prone to bite you or others out of protection, and they tend to bark alot because the have smaller bladders, needing to go out to potty more often. Don't get a small dog unless you can stay home with him\her alot or can take him\her everywhere you go. They are very needy, and since they are so small they are subject to catch (very easliy) to all sorts of diseases and lets not forget the environment. (They are low to the ground) And also how would a small dog protect you? Would he bite a bad guy's ankle to death? Come on! There are plenty of barkless medium sized dogs out there, like the Basenji, which is considered "the barkless dog." They do make noise though. They "Yodel".

I have a chi and she is very obedient and energetic.... i think it all depends on how you train it.... because some are yappy and mean.... any toy dog you choose will be prefect as long as you take the time to train it, so many ppl buy toy breeds assuming they will sit on their laps ant virtually go in a drawer when not being played with... remember they aren't toys at all, and need training, socializing and schedule.
Best of Luck =)

Maltese are very smart and they are toys dogs. I was surprised how quickly my maltese learned her name and where too do her buisness. If your maltese doesnt learn so quickly dont give up. Get trainer. Every two weeks is even enough . It works really well but if you dont want a trainer you really dont need it . They are playful and yet calm like to be in your hands . They are not noisy. Recommend getting a girl. they are more calm and less noisy . I have both. They are also very adorable.

Toy Poodles are great...very intelligent and easy to train and very playful.
The Toy Poodle is 10 inches or under at the highest point of the shoulders. They are also very loyal and good with children.
