Yes. Barrier methods of contraception (condom/femidom) are the ONLY ones that help protect against STI's like HIV. And then only if used properly, and nothing leaks/bursts.
Getting to know your partner first,getting screened, and then remaining faithful is the ONLY way to be sure.

Yeah they protect against most STD's. It's says that they're like 97% effective on the package.
