No offense but I think that you are assuming something based on your own fantasy version of reality. I am sure there are people out there shallow enough to do this, but it is certainly a small percentage.

Actually, don't most people turn away from the church when some catastrophe or tragedy kills a loved one? Every Christian I know has been so since childhood, none have converted from something else. Atheists and agnostics, on the other hand, are more often "created" when they realize that god has done nothing for them, and the idea no longer makes sense.

It's that same old "no atheists in foxholes" thing. That when the crap hits the fan and you're stunned/scared/shocked, you'll turn to god and then keep on believing if you survive. Like the bus full of Christian camp kids trapped in the flooded river. The survivors say, I was praying all the time and god heard me. What about all the ones who were also praying their little heads off and drowned - did god hear them?
I don't think praying out of desperation or abject fear qualifies as suddenly choosing to believe.

each person's tolerance to a situation is different; but i am sure God will one day strike hard that hard shell and pull a person down on their knees. 911 and Katrina are just some examples; there might still be people who had been exposed to either those situations who are still in their hard shells.. but yes, God knows the TIME and HOW He will bring each of us to our knees.
So, yes, some people wait for tragedy....not so smart, but its their choice.

How many leave the church after tragedy strikes and they discover their belief in God offers no comfort?

Bad things happen and it brings us closer to God. Some people need that to have a relationship with him. It is kind of sad, because maybe someone is waiting for something to say ok you need God and it never happens, then they die and live without our Lord. Although, I wouldn't condem these people because thank the Lord they came to God someway or another.

Don't worry. Some of us won't accept the god fantasy, even AFTER a tragedy has taken place.

**YAWN*** Yet another "there are no atheists in foxholes" argument. What a bore.
I've withstood a number of tragedies in my life, yet I've never turned to the church.
You Christians just don't get it do you?

When people realize their mortality, they start to hope in life after death. But with that hope comes the admittance of an almighty figure. That is when they realize God and return to church. It is sad that God proves his being through death.

Because then they're forced to find comfort. They recognize that as sure as they were that they didn't need God they now do. They see their own mortality hanging in the balance and they get scared.
