That is a really gross generalization. Don't condemn an entire demographic of population just for the actions and words of a few.
Also, religious people don't exactly have the exclusive corner on the elitism market. I have run into plenty of elitist atheists, with their attitude that they are oh so much better educated and evolved then those of us who have faith in a God/s. Pot, meet kettle.

I think that's a gross generalization and you're basing that on the few idiots you're met. Well, I am no elitist. I'm a believer in God but I don't go around preaching to anyone and couldn't really care less about what people do with their own lives as long as their happy and they're not hurting anyone.

If you saw someone getting on a plane that you knew had a bomb on it and was going to crash, would you say "oh, well I shouldn't say anything....if that person wants to believe that the plane isn't going to crash, they have that right...." No...you would try to convince them that the plane had a bomb on it (i.e. that you were right and they were wrong.) For people who truly believe that Christ is the only way to avoid going to Hell, saying that they are right and you are wrong is a sense of obligation for them. They would feel that they were doing you a disservice not to try to convince you. So it's not an elitist thing...they are trying to INCLUDE you and help you get to heaven, too. If they were elitist as you say, they would say "go ahead and believe what you want...as long as I'm getting into heaven, I don't care what happens to you."

They have been taught by their parents and church to be that way, A lot of them grow out of that when they get older, Some however carry it to extremes when they get older.

They want you to believe in them, so they can lead you to heaven.
It's an ego-trip, pure and simple.
