i have my first dog, a yellow lab, named duke. he is 1 1/2 years old. i am home all day with him, and i noticed that he sleeps a lot, and doesn't want to go outside too much, unless i am out there. is this normal? he checked out of the humane society with a clean bill of health and is up to date with his shots...my friends gave him to me, and they took him to the vet recently for a check up and he was declared healthy by them too.
that said, would this be normal dog behavior? he is playful and happy, eats a lot and drinks a lot...i have never owned a dog before, so i am not sure if they are supposed to sleep this much. i have had cats, and i know they sleep most of the day, and he is sleeping as much as a cat would. it's also really hot out...
i hate to sound silly, but i was just wondering. thank you.

Your dog is at the age where he has outgrown being a puppy. As long as he is eating, drinking, playing, interested in what you are doing when you are doing something then yes, this behavior is normal.

My dog goes for a walk in the morning, eats some food, and climbs up onto the couch for a 3-5 hour nap. She will get up if I ask her to, will go with me or play, but will return to her nap as soon as I stop doing anything interesting. Laundry, dishes, and Yahoo Answers do not interesting her at all. She is 3 years old.

Dogs sleep somewhere on the order of 13 hours a day. So, odds are he's perfectly normal. When it's hot, no one wants to run around. Dogs included. Having my own businesses, my two little ones are with me all day. They sleep at my feet, under my desk.

Yep, it's normal. My dog sleeps a lot during the day, too.

Dog training are excellent and very helpful to build you a stronger relationship with your dog. Read more https://tinyurl.im/fDoui

After I started training my dog, he became very attached to me and loves to stay by side as long as he can. But just going to them won't help. You have to practice what they teach you outside of the class and you need to keep up with it at least every now and then after the class ends otherwise they'll just go back to previous habits. This course is a really good place to go for dog obedience classes. It get's your dog around other people and dogs to socialize while getting the training you need. As for electric collars, I would say to not get one. In my experience, they're only a negative effect on your dog. I mean of course you're going to need to correct your dog, but being positive and encouraging your dog works a lot faster and easier.

Every dog is different, so unless you have a german shepherd or a really smart dog, it might take a while to train her. You might get frustrated with her, but go easy. She's still a puppy and has a lot of energy. A backyard or somewhere to run will help her get rid of a lot of energy that might cause her to misbehave from boredom.

It is normal. Dogs spend most of their time sleeping. They normally sleep 13 or 14 hours a day, but often sleep even longer.

I have a toy poodle who's a little over 2 and a shih tzu mix who's a little over 3 and they do the same thing with me. They hardly come to me and "ask" to be let out to go potty...mostly it's me asking and them running behind me to the door. They sleep most of the day and wake up at certain times to play with each other.

I think it's normal if he has been given a clean bill of health.

i always say, and you can quote me on this....let sleeping dogs lay. dogs appear to be asleep a lot, but are really just daydreaming while resting, they have wild imaginations that have them chasing rabbits and butterflies, grabbing a pork roast off a table and chowing it down in a corner unnoticed, garbage that they never will be able to get to that in their dreams they really want to.... i'm telling you, they have so much to think about!! seriously, if your lab has a clean bill of health, up to date on shots, is on heart worm preventative and flea and tick control, you should feel confident that he's behaving normally. and you mentioned it's hot out...these are the dog days of summer!! your puppers doesn't want to excert a lot of energy right now because it takes a lot of energy to remain cool underneath all that fur. and he's eating and drinking normally, playful and happy....what more could you ask for in your new found friend?? i think you've got a wonderful, healthy pet, and that you are a wonderful, caring pet owner. best of luck!! (if you have any concerns, please do not hesitate to contact your vet- always better to be safer now than to be sorry later)

This is normal behavior. He only wants to go outside when you go because he knows it is definite attention. Dogs can become very spoiled and with you being home with him all day, he is exactly that, spoiled, like my dog. :-) When there is something really wrong, they will let you know. Don't worry, you sound like a good dog mom.
