Religion is there to discipline human beings, giving a sense of direction and purpose in life - in a sense an order out of chaos. Yes we can live in a world devoid of religion but it would be pretty chaotic. I would agree with many of the postings here that it is not religion that causes the problems but certain people's interpretation and tendency to go to extremes; coupled with lack of tolerance, compromise and understanding of other religions.

Religion is neccessary because some people need purpose and direction in thier lives that they can only get from religion. It is something to fall back on and usually a community that one can use as a support group.

Although it causes problems, religion helps many people on an emotional and mental level. A world devoid of religion would need something similar to bring groups of people together. There would still be several ways of thinking. Different philosophies would cause just as much conflict. An example of this would be socialism vs. capitalism.

I have long dreamt of a world without artificial barriers, no passports, no religion, one language. If religion had never existed, humankind would not have had the problems it has and is still suffering. People say that there is nothing wrong with religion, it's only perverted by those who misinterpret it. Man has been misinterpreting religion for eons, using it to kill and control, to make money and wars. As the secure people of the world see the escalating problems, caused by religion, more and more will turn away from it. within the next 45 years humankind will become secure enough to make religion a private philosophy, they will get it out of the schools and off the streets. One day we will realise that it is humankind who are the Gods, or will be.

No. a thousand times no!

But the second part is more problematic. consider the former Soviet Union - religion was officially suppressed, yet bounced back, stronger than ever, after the fall of communism. It does seem to be the opiate of the masses. I would love to see a secular, humanistic world, and hope that the current turmoil generated by the theists represents the death throes of religion, and we will move on and mature as a species.

Religions are merely a way of life. We should all just grow up and learn to respect different customs and cultures without trying to convert each other to what we think is a better way of life.

It is not necessary to follow any organised religion. It is possible for an individual to form his own principles. What is important is to respect each other for what we are.

Religion apart, patriotism is another divider of humanity. Rather than identifying ourselves as being from a particular country, it is better not to forget we are all humans.

We can never live in harmony, with or without religion, unless we can agree that humanity is one big family.

I would never abandon islam even if i am close to being killed Insha'ALLAH. Why should we give the truth up just to make people who dont believe in religion happy? If that was the case why dont atheists all follow religion rather than no religion instead! Also its merely an excuse if theres no religion around then people will fight racial fights, then people will fight appearance fights and so on. Islam was a mercy sent by god to us all in uniting and caring for each other, and we should follow it, then again everyone has thier own choices and everyone has thier own grave, i just hope everyone submits to the Almighty to enter heaven Insha'ALLAH. God bless...

Religion is not the cause of all the worlds problems. We human beings are the ones who are the cause of the problems.

Why do people keep saying religion is the cause of all these problems. It's not the religion that causes the problems. It's the idiots who do stupid things in the name of that particular religion, when in truth, they are just very very confused people.

We need Christianity because it is the only way to build The Kingdom of God on Earth. We cannot be acceptable to God as we are, because by nature we are selfish, violent, greedy, self-seeking, immoral, careless of the needs of others. Only Jesus can provide the answer to this, because only He was able to take the punishment for our failings. This is because Almighty God became a sinless man, prepared to sacrifice Himself for the sake of every person that has ever or will ever live. To those that accept His sacrifice for our sake, God gives The Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit gives us the power of Christ and gradually transform us into His image. God sees us as completed in this transformation so, even though we are still fallible, still make mistakes and slip up, God sees us as perfect. Any sin we commit at this point is by choice, because the compulsion to sin has been removed. This is a more serious thing, of course, because it is deliberate. However, we still can come back to Christ for forgiveness.

God needs us to be loyal to Him. He wants us to love all, forgive all, show mercy and judge no-one. Our nature becomes one of love, joy, peace, patience, humility, self-control, goodness, kindness and faithfulness, these being the nature of God Himself.

The Holy Spirit is the only way to create The Kingdom of God on Earth. Jesus Christ provides the only way we can receive The Holy Spirit.

Even then, we still have the choice whether or not we are loyal to God. We may exercise all the power of Christ but, if we are disloyal to God, we still will not get Eternal Life. We must be loyal to God above all.

One of the definitions of religion is : A cause, principle, or activity pursued with zeal or conscientious devotion.

With that respect, you can have religions without focusing on God. And yes, anything in excess creates problems.
