Maybe you can tell by the way he acts or by his hand movements. You can also ask him like invite him to a gay club/bar. (if he gets insulted he isnt, if he hesitates on answering or agrees to go, he is)
I found out a guy wasnt gay that way.

The hardist way is to just ask, i'm sure you want to avoid that.
I suggest asking him to accompany you to gay-ish things, hanging out in coffee shops and chatting, just try to spend more time with him. Maybe try something romantic-ish like ask if he wants to see some movie with you. Just watch his reactions closely but in the end I have to suggest you directly ask him. But it would be easier after some time of hanging out in romantic-ish settings.
I have no envy for your situation, and must with you the best of luck.
....Or you could do what I did when I have that problem, invite them over get him and yourself tipsy, then just ask like it isn't a big deal. Worked for me.
