Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can get him to do this? He has no problem using the litter box, and he does so every time, but he NEVER covers his poop or pee. He's 3 years old. My female cat (4 yrs old), on the other hand, spends almost 2 minutes covering her excretions sometimes! It can really smell when my male cat uses the litter box. Any help? Thanks!

Hi there...Cats communicate in a variety of ways, from scent to visual to vocal. Cats will regularly mark off their territory with urine. Small cats bury their feces, large cats do not. Also, some male cats do not bury their feces, and use this as territorial markers. This is quite common and difficult to retrain as well in cats older than a year. Trying to retrain this habit could also create a new problem where he may begin to have bowel movments oustide the litter box around the home.

I have a male cat, Kinsey, who is exactly the same way. He never covers anything -- in the box or in the garden. He poops right on the grass.

Sylvie on the other hand, digs and digs, and digs............it drives me nuts especially before I am ready to get up in the morning. Sylvie always has come inside to use the litterbox. Never goes outside.

It's a very common occurence in male cats. It has to do with their need to mark territory. But there's nothing you can do about it. I had a male cat who did the same thing. But I also had a female kitten that went and covered it for him after.lol

A small investment in a littermaid automatic litter box will solve the problem, Because if the cat doesn't cover it by now, He never will.

Is your male neutered? That can help the smell. And some cats just aren't as clean as others. Your male may never learn to cover. Sorry.

your male cat probably figures your female cat will take care of it when she gets there. She can cover alot of poop in 2 minutes.
