Bulfinch's Mythology is a good start, and most book stores on-line or off carry it, new or used. Hamilton is also a suitable reference. For more details, check around the web for Robert Graves. Top of the line is Larousse Encyclopedia of Mythology, which can often be found on remainders for a fraction of the cost. For books on the sources of myths, look into Penguin and Pelican Editions. I built up my classical library for about $1 a book. Talk to Powell's Bookstore, which has a net site. B.

For a visual overview of mythology, try "The Ultimate Encyclopedia of Mythology." It has many entries and reprductions of artwork that covers many differnet myths and legends form Greece, Rome, and many others. It ties similarities between gods and goddesses together and also provides handy family trees in the back. I also use the "Dictionary of Classical Mythology" by J.E. Zimmerman for more focused information on Greek and Latin.

The most authoritative I've found is, "Greek Mythology: Fact or Fiction?" by R.L. Stine.
