Can I wire my car amplifier to be powered by a Home outlet? I have a 500 watt sub and a car amp to match. I won't use it in my car so I wonder if I could have the sub for my home use. So this means I need to hook up the amp to a home outlet for power. Any idea's how to do this??

Thanks

Yes-

Buy a 12v power supply kit and run it from that.

If you cannot find one, make one easily by buying a 12v transformer and a fullwave rectifier from radio shack. SHould be less than $15

Hold on there, if your car amp can really put out 500watts (rms or average) then you are going to need a lot more current capability than a $15 cheapo power supply can put out.

basically P (watts) = I(amps) x V(voltage)

so if you need 500watts divided by 12v = 42 amps

Radio Shack power supplies are good for about 1 to 2 amps, I have one, it won't even turn on a 35w per channel amp with out popping the built in breaker.

now an amp like this isn't going to draw 42 amps all the time, maybe never, most of the time it will be around 5 to 10 amps.

I would get a 12v (really 13.8v, yes cars are really 13.8v and some a little higher) power supply that can deliver at least 10amps or more. It should be heavy, a step down transformer with this kind of current capability is not small or light. As clean and filtered as you can get too.

you can find a 120v AC to 12v DC converter at any walmart, radio shack, meijer, or electronics store. however check to make sure that your amp will handle an 8 ohm input or check to see if you can change the ohm output on your receiver. you are running probably 8 ohms to the amp which it is not probably designed to handle, then running it too a 4 or 2 ohm speaker. so check your documentation for the source (receiver), amp, and speaker itself also make sure that the rca out that you are using is not amplified to begin with or you will burn up your receiver and amp within seconds...

you want a converter, you may p.c.. up at Rad Shack. yet those are extreme. basically save the 70 or more desirable dollaz your gonna blow on it,pawn the amp and audio equipment no individual needs to purchase from you and purchase a house unit. I easily have considered some sturdy ones commence at one hundred fifty.00 w/audio equipment. And it wont appear like crap on your the front room. basically make positive your persons do not spill bongwater throughout it like they do your carpet.
