You may want to check your local animal shelter, they may even have a mixed Akita breed which also can make a good pet. If you know alot about Akita's disposition and temperament, and have info on training, and teaching them how to socialize around children and animals, that is good, if not, I suggest you get that information in a book, or read about them on a web site. They make great watch dogs, but they are not a good first dog, and you must know how to discipline them, and let them know you are alpha leader, but at the same time, be tuned in to their feelings, and how they reason. The Akita, is one of the few breeds that can actually reason, and find a solution to their problems! They are very intelligent dogs, but they must be treated with respect. They can be stubborn, and headstrong in getting their own way, and on the other hand, they can be lovable and loyal. You must be consistent when training them. Is there a particular reason you want an Akita? Is this your first dog? If so, this is not the type of dog you want.

That being said, try www.petfinder.org. You can look at different shelters that have Akitas in your area and also look at classified ads from people in your state that are trying to rehome their pets.

You get what you pay for. If you buy a cheap Akita, then you could run into bad hips, horrible temper and other bad things. Find a good breeder with good dogs, cheap isn't the answer to everything.
