The parents supply the diet in the first place ...so they obviously have their own agenda and it includes an unhealthy child. i.e. the unhealthy child serves some perverse purpose for the parent.

because people are idiots. they also don't want to make the kid feel bad. i know people have a thing these days that all kids have to feel equal. even on sports teams, so when another team will win, the loser gets a reward also. which is ridiculous..but i guess it's the same with weight. also now everyone is like, its okay to have some extra pounds, don't worry...a little extra fat is good.. but they don't realize the difference between curves, and large amounts of fat!!

Well, actually a kid that is 13 and 5ft4 and 140lb is not overweight. They may be at risk of becoming overweight, but they are not overweight with a BMI of 24. It probably would be a good idea to lose 5lb-10lb, however even if they were to remain at 140lb, when they reach adulthood, this would be considered a perfectly acceptable weight.
I'd also like to point out that you have no idea of this teenager's frame size or muscle mass and therefore, she may still have a good body fat percentage at 140lb, for all you know.
Also, it has been proven that people who are slightly overweight, but have healthy lifestyles, exercise regularly and eat reasonably well can expect to have a longer life expectancy than someone that is underweight, but unfit, does not exercise and does not eat healthily.
I agree, it won't hurt to lay of the coke and chips. But this has nothing to do with weight, but the general health of the person and applies to everyone, no matter how much they weigh.
HTH : )

Are you basing this opinion on the BMI calculators you can find online? If so, that's not necessarily true. What those calculators don't take into consideration is your frame size. (Same goes for the weight charts you find.) It is very possible that a 5'4", 140 lb. person could be overweight if that person has a small frame, but if that person has a large frame, he/she could be considered "average" or "normal."
I'm 5'9" and weigh 175 lb. Do you think I'm overweight? Considering I'm a woman, your immediate thought is probably yes...I should weigh 115 lb. or 120 lb. right? WRONG. I have a very large frame (thanks Dad!) and at my lowest weight (165 lb.) I was too thin and my doctor told me to gain some weight before I became pregnant.
While it's true that eating junk food and drinking soda in excess can be bad for you, and growing kids DO need to eat healthy, nutritious foods becuase they are growing so fast, moderation is the key. "There are no bad foods, only bad habits." (Alton Brown)
You refer to "she" in your post. To whom, may I ask, are you referring?
For any young people out there, please do not take this person's post seriously. Only your DOCTOR can determine whether you're overweight or not by doing a series of painless tests (measuring your frame size at your elbow, taking your height and weight into consideration, etc.) Please do not let one VERY uninformed and uneducated person bring you down or give you a complex.

I'm 5'6" and 110 =D....but yea....i think she needs to watch her weight. I know it's fun to be a teen, and I tend to think that I can eat w/e I want because I'm only 14. But if I were that weight....I might reconsider.

I don't know where the question came from but I believe overweight children should lose the extra pounds!
My 12 year old son is 5'8" and 185 lbs. He looks good and performs well on the Football Field but I am worried.
He does not drink a lot of soda or eat a lot of sweets. He loves FOOD! Meat, potatoes and milk would make him happy for the rest of his life!
I am 5'11 at 150 lbs. and his Father is 6'5" at 280 lbs., yes, my son, will get taller, but the weight has to go!
His 17 year old brother is 6'4" at 180 lbs., his 15 year old brother is 5'6" at 100 lbs.( nothing but legs on this one, he is going to shoot up)! My youngest son is overweight and will not conform to better eating habits, as much as I try!

All kids need to be on a healthy eating plan loaded with fresh fruit and veggies. Instead of berating the kid do something fun with her like playing ball, jumping rope, walking in the Mall. Losing weight is nothing if she has to be around negative people. What are you doing to help on the positive.

most parents cant cope with the fact that thier kid is overweight. to make themselves feel better they tell the child that they are fine. this way if they are convinced that their child is not overweight, then they believe that this can not be traced back to bad parenting. also it is for the child themselves. if told that they do not need to lose weight then the chid believes that the parents love them no matter what instead of hounding them all of the time about how they really need to loose weight. but i agree with you because there are to many overweight people around that believe its ok or tell themselves/ their kids that they dont need to lose weight.

She is overweight by who's standards? YOURS?? Who are YOU to say? No, it doesn't hurt to stay away from junk food, but I hardly think that being 5'4" and 140lbs. is a recipe for heart disease. Her weight depends on several things, and I'd be curious to know how physically active she is.

Well, 5'4" and 140 lbs. a person is considered at a heavy but healthy weight...http://nhlbisupport.com/bmi/
But yes, it wouldn't hurt for parents to suggest weight loss...I think most parents think that if they tell their child that he/she is overweight, then they are somehow being "bad parents" and will cause their child to become anorexic/bulemic...
