Most of the modern car makers including ford changes the car's body styles every 4 or won't go more than 5 years. The customer satisfaction is taken into account, if the car is a major hit they will keep the model and will make some minor changes (eg; lights, wheels) and push the car for atleast 4 yrs. But todays compete market has made makers to change the shape within a certain time..otherwise people would go for the newer models and modern shapes...afterall...car makers don't want to loose their customers and profit!

Not sure about other models, but the Mustang has changes about every 4-6 years during the last 2 decades. 2005+ is the S-197 body style, 1999-2004 is the new edge body style, 1994-1998 is the SN-95 bodystyle, and 1987-1993 were the foxbodies, and the 1979-1986 i believe were the "four-eyed" mustangs.
