My mother-in-law just gave me three birds she rescued. 1 male parakeet, 1 female parakeet and this other one, (I am assuming female ...) only makes me shake my head. My mother-in-law claims that this bird is a parakeet/lorikeet mix.
I have looked on the net and can't seem to find this type of coloring anywhere in ANY Lorikeet pictures.

Is that SERIOUSLY even possible?!

Parakeets and lorikeets can't mix. It might be a hybrid between two kinds of lorikeets. You know that lorikeets eat special foods, right?
Where's there a picture of it? Or can you send me one? I can tell you if it's a lorikeet and maybe what kind.

Breeding canaries and finches together, or breeding a lorikeet and parakeet together, isn't really an accurate comparison. Canaries and finches are essentially the same species. No real scientific line is drawn between them in stone.

I don't know whether they share enough similar genetic material to successfully hybridize. With only a few exceptions, successful attempts to hybridize totally different species haven't brought the healthiest birds, if they even did bring any. Interspecies breeding is common. Inter-family breeding is a much harder.

Maybe you could post a picture of it here: http://www.tailfeathersnetwork.com/community/forumdisplay.php?f=19 There's always a game of "name that bird" going on one time or another, there. They could probably tell you what you've got, if they can see it.

I would LOVE to see a photo, but would have to say, not possible.
Although I have seen Green-cheek to Maroon bellied mixed, and Macaw hybrids, they are always been found in Species to sub-species breedings. Both are Aussie's in this case but come from different species. If you want to share that photo, I will try to tell you what my best guess is to the mix. Very interesting!!

What does your bird eat? Aren't lorikeets nectar eaters and parakeets seed eaters? I doubt that it is possible.

Yes. It's rarely heard of by the average populous because most people don't house them together. Conures interbreed in their own species and outside. Macaws and finches interbreed within their species. There are others, but I cannot verify them.

I don't think it is a mix. It could just be one of those really odd colored birds that shows up once in a while.

Yes it is possible. You can breed a canary with a finch & that is where you get the "society finch".
